2 1/2 hour ride turns into a week long adventure.....

step up to the bar and have a listen to an adventure we are still on....
Plastic I think still has some room on it...

Started out called a friend that has a 2001 road king he got early last
year, we both need gas and so just as we were filling up a car pulls next to
us asking for directions to Hog Wild.... decided might as well drive by the
thing never been there... told them to follow us. We headed out of west
liberty toward Conesville, IA where Circle of Pride MC has Hog Wild every
May and another one on labor day weekend. as we got closer more and more
bike attached to us. based groups of 3,8 10 in the last 5 miles. Not sure
if the car that was following kept up or not. decided to pull in had an
hour to kill at least see what it cost. 40 buck each. well, to nice to pay
that so we headed out from there and decided to head over to nuscatine using
the back roads( better curves and hills and almost no traffic)

As we rode allong the Mississippi River there was a car show there, but we
decided to have a couple of brats at brew local bar/resturant service took a
bit longer than what I was expecting only had 15 mins to get home and we
were 14 mile from home when I get home had to pick up myu girl for
graduation and make sure she was dressed... did not think I would cut it
that close... so we headed out of townopened it up out in the county....
started to head north he was leading and he turned north the frills from is
leather saddle bags picked up a couple of rocks which I never thought they
would then he pulled away but not for long a strap came undone from his bag
and was dragging foot and a half behind as I got closer I just thought....
wow your done..... final drive belt broke we were only 7 miles from home...
I was late already.. told him to coast it as long as he could to get it to a
field entrance but he just stopped it says it won't go... I said yeah....
your done... your final drive is broken... we got off and looked at it...
pulled it out and asked him what he wantted to do. He knew I had to get
home. He called his father in law and he was going to come get him and his
bike. so off I went.

called me up and came over to my house looking for sockets, and monday night
we started tearing into it. First real digging deep into a harley never
would have guess the new belt cost $217.00 with out tax. When I got to his
house he had one muffler off, the primary cover off, the tensioner loosened
up and the saddle bags off. By the time I left we had whole primary, the
mufflers off both sides, all the foot boards, the rear wheel, and the swing
arm off. So Tuesday he would get some more parts and we would work on
putting it together tuesday night.

well let's just say I am heading to the harley store for a couple of more
parts today..

More to come later....

I hates to tell you that the swinging arm and rear wheel don't have to
come off, just the shockie and the LR motor mount.

Be sure to use some neversieze on the swing arm bolt so's it comes out
easy next time.

Well Tuesday night we started by putting ht new belt in and then getting the
swingarm into place with the new bushings on both sides putting the pivot
rod(don't remember correct name for it) back in thought we had it in all the
way but did not started the nut on the end must have had only 2 treads on
because as I was tightening it got real easy. The Rod was not all the way
through. The lip was hung up on the inside of the bushing. lifted the
tranny up a little and hit the rod and it popped all the way through now but
the nut was trashed so we moved on to other things. worked on getting the
wheel back into place. It went on to easy because after we had the axle in
and every thing adjusted I notice the brake caliber was not in the right
place and would do no good because it was not hooked onto the swingarm...
soooo loosed up the wheel and took out the spacer and moved it over and
readjusted the wheel.... moving to the primary we did not have any silicon
so it was a good place to stop as it was 11:30 again.

So on Wednesday I stopped at the dealer for him to pick up a nut and found
that they did not have any but they did sell 6 of them last year and the
service manager was mad that they did not have any, but the dealer 60 miles
away had a couple of the nuts, the same dealer my buddy had to go to after
he found out this one did not have the rubber bushing for on Monday!!! So
last night we got the inner primary on and the chain and gears on but we
could not get the clutch adjuster in all the way at first it only needed to
go in a 1/16th of an inch then after looking at it and playing around it
needed to go in a 1/4 of an inch... studied the service manual and parts
manual could not figure out what happened. then I got to thinking and
remember the space in the clutch cable and we messed with that and amazing,
fit perfect. adjust the tensioner then put the cover back on. did not have
much time so we left putting the muffler and floor board on for Thursday
night. so our 2 1/2 hour ride and adventure might be done tonight.

The best thing about this was doing something that I know a couple people I
ride with would never try, he saved a bunch of money and we did it
ourselves. Took probably twice as long as it should but we both learned a
lot, made a couple of mistakes but we did it... so when we have it all
together tonight I am going to hand him info about making his 88 a 103in,
since he saved all that money!!!

Yea, had mine (02 Dyna WG) compleatly torn down couple times for motor upgrades and what not.
They are allot easyer to work on then it looks... It's just that you have to take some much shit off sometimes
to get to the real job (like the belt). Wait till you have to take the trans. sprocket off. That's an air gun job.

Glad you guys got it together. Give that fresh belt just a hair more slack for the first 50-100 miles, then
pull it to spec tightness. They come out of the box stiff as an oak tree.

yeah it was pretty stiff he got the missing nut(that we stripped) last
friday but did not work on it till tuesday he had to run up to Wisconsin to
get a 1960 bug over the weekend. He came over to my house to put some
light miles on it. All back together only thing he has to readjust is the
shifter it is a tade higher than he had it before.
Just got back from his house... very nice looking bug some guy started it
and it is 90% primer no bodo on it pretty solid car for Wisconsin. All the
glass is out of it and inside did not look at the inside. He is letting me
borrow a bungey net thingy to hold my helmet when not wearing it. I am
riding to southern Il by Marion thurdays night and spending the weekend
around there and need a helmet through MO. It will be my first desination
on the bike. I have riden 225 mile trips around the house but this will be
over 400 miles one way. One of the reasons for getting the one I did. I am
excited but nervous... kind of.

Went from one cost, to the other, and back. Painfull at times (invest in a sheep skin seat cover), but man... Nothing
beats a long ass bike trip! About the only weather I can't drive in is cold. Cold sucks. But, I hate cold anyway. I
bitch when its 70.

Enjoy the trip, be safe, and watch for big four legged critters that think its safer in the street, then back in the woods.

Cold I can hand I figured out what I need to wear until it got to about 37
degrees. Did not even have the electric vest plugged in. then the snow
started to fly and the ice was on the roads from Nov 20th till about Mar30th
I think. It is the snow that gives me problems my boy told me today that I
need to get a side car. I showed him Tud's and he thought that was pretty
cool.....

so Tud have one on me...
