Sounds like either you need a calculator yourself or you were trying to
rip her off.

Best Harley dealership parts guy I know works at Bowling Green HD.

Got me the adjuster for the rear axle on my FLT('82)off the shelf
after the local Little Rock dealer had told me they were discontinued.
Then he managed to find a rubber pad for my brake pedal...another
"discontinued" part.

Too bad I don't live closer to Bowling Green.

Had one like that in West Bend, WI. Knew his stuff and liked to talk
scoots when not busy! Always makes time when a customer needs advice
and even calls in a wrench when he needs more info! Great dealership.
When the guy bought it he sent people to other dealerships to see how
they were treated. When they came back he asked them if they liked
how they were treated. They didn't and he then explained he did not
want his customers to feel that way!

That's one thing about this particular dealer, they have a parts guy that
I've dealt with for some years, at two different dealerships. He knows the
bikes and usually doesn't look up my Shovel parts, he just goes in the back
and gets them - and he hasn't missed yet. Now that I'm gonna be buying Evo
parts, too, we'll see how he does on "new" bikes.

Good parts guys are rare and valuable. Best parts guy I ever knew was a
guy who worked at a VW dealer in Richmond, VA back in the late 60s/early
70s. He'd memorized the thirteen digit part number for every single
part on all the VWs made back then. Every single fucking one. I used
to go in there and bet him beer that he didn't know the number for some
freaking obscure Bus part or Bug part and he'd spin the microfiche
reader (for the young'uns, that's a prehistoric method of storing actual
pictures of pages of documents in a non-digital fashion. Yes, we really
used to do that in the old days.) and tell me the number. I'd find the
number and every single time I owed him a beer. Guy had an eidetic
memory, or the closest thing to it that I've ever seen.

Wonder what ever happened to that guy? Probably got fired and went to
work doing something completely different.

When I worked the parts counter at Harley-Davidson of Glendale, CA I
took time to get the parts the customer needed. If it was an obsolete
part I would try to find it elsewhere. I remember a customer needed a
rear sprocket for his 1969 Servicar. I knew V-Twin carried them at
that time so I took his money and put it on the order list. The shop
sold a part, made the customer happy, and made money right? The owner
took me aside and told me, "You are spending too much time finding old
parts for old motorcycles. We sell new parts and accessories for new
motorcycles." Go figure.

I do the same thing but the difference is that owners of old bikes are
respected even if they do take up half an hour of your time chasing
down obsolete bolts.
I have several people who ask for me by name because they know I'll do
my damdest to find them a part.

Damn nice owner also. I spent the night in BG on the way to Biloxi.
The new dealership is just across the interstate from where we stayed.
Killing time; my pal and I were browsing the floor and goodies dept.
when a fellow asked if we were finding what we needed. After telling
him we were just killing time while traveling; I mentioned that I'd
never noticed his shop before and he proceeded to introduce himself as
the owner, told us the store had been there just (I think) three years
and then took us on a tour of the whole building. He owned a really
fine looking Heritage Classic which was parked back in storage.

Invited us to stop back anytime for refreshments and a visit.
