The difference was significant and also compared to previous one up
riding this year.
Possible causes:
Winter Gas
Carbon on plugs from warming up at idle and running rich due to sub
freezing temps.
too much city riding.

I noticed it was way down from last year.
I am just wondering if the Power Commander has improved power at the
expense of economy when I was told it should do both due to having run
rich previously.

Maybe, but remember the MC rag that tested the propeller behind the carbs
scam and reported big mileage improvements only to find that the shop they'd
paid to install them had done nothing. Only a programmed dyno run is truly
objective.

I've not tested running a lower octane in my EG ..but I know that in
my truck if I put in the ethanol blend instead of regular unleaded I
get about 10% lower gas mileage. So it's worth it to pay the extra
dime and uase regular.

What effect would ethanol have on the Harley?

E10 or E85? Don't try E85 in it but I've used E10 in mine for years and
years and it's been fine. It's pretty much all you can get around here.

I run 89 octane in mine and that is all I run. I've checked my gas mileage
on the same highway several times. From my house to Des Moines kum & Go and
I've got any where from 52 down to 48, its always different. Wind has a lot
to play in it so I just can't see the sense in comparing octane, when it has
nothing to do with mileage in the first place.

Unless your computer can sense ping and it retards the timing to keep it
from pinging then octane plays a factor. That is why if a car manufacture
says to run 91 they mean it. If you run 87 the computer will know its
pinging, retard the timing and the mileage can suffer for it. The last I
knew Harley didn't make such a computer so from my end of it I can't see
comparing octane for mileage when I've ridden the same highway several times
and always see a difference in mileage with the same octane. And, I check my
mileage all the time, not kidding I check it at every stop at all the long
rides. Not that Des Moines is that far from me but I still check it.

Geez, I'd be ecstatic to get that good. Best I got so far is 39 on a
long H.O.G. ride. Around town I'm only getting 36 on a brand-new
Ultra.

I turn 2 grand at 55 that helps.

When I go to J&P cycle I can get 55 on the way there, the wind is to my
back. On the way home I may get 45 going into the wind. That is why I just
can't see anyone fussing over octane and fuel mileage. There are just to
many variables in gas mileage in the first place.

The one many tend to overlook is the gas tank. Let's work
with 40mpg and a typical fill-up is going to be around the 4
gallon mark. One tenth of a gallon on the top up is going to
make 1mpg in your calculations.

I figure if I can't afford the gas I can't afford the
Harley. Gas is cheap, even when the price sucks.

Harley uses ion sensing knock detection like most of the car manufacturers do.

Answering my own question here, I sat down and did the math. Looks
like I'll save about $60/year - on average, a whopping five bucks a
month - if I put lower octane fuel in my $25,000 Harley. Not worth it.
I'm having way too much fun riding it to have it need premature engine
work because I was too damn cheap to put the right gas in it!

Sorry for the bandwidth and noise - everybody have a few drinks on me
while the plastic's still good.

You just need to ride more, so you'll save more.

Yes, I've been hanging around my wife too long.

Heh. Yeah, I keep finding QVC boxes on the front porch when I get home
before she does. She must be saving a ton of money!

Only got 2K miles on the new scoot, but that'll change after a few
trips.
