The Assassin

After watching Checa take out Neukirchner I think he deserves a new
nick name.

Did Checa lose the front and was already crashing when he took out Max?
Or was there simply not enough room and Max closed the door?

Checa had already crashed when he clipped Neukirchner's front wheel.
Whether he'd have made it round the corner if he hadn't crashed is
questionable....

There's a couple of replays including one in slow motion about a
minute into this clip: * w w w .worldsbk . com /pubb EN/popup.php?id=89

Looks like Checa's going in too fast and couldn't get it stopped. The
front tyre is scrubbing sideways and he's running wide. With nowhere to
go because Max is already turning in. It's a real shame because both of
them deserved their first win and Max didn't deserve to break his ankle.

Checa went in too hot and crashed taking Max out. Max did not shut
the door. It really sucks that Checa was able to re-enter and finish
5th while Max was sidlined with an injury.

I seem to remember a few years ago, I think it was Hopkins got
suspended for a turn 1 crash and then a week later Checa did worse and
got no punishment. There is a difference between being agressive and
going bezerk. There should be some penalty for what he did.

Yep, but that's racing. If' you'd closed down a 3 sec gap in four
laps, and had a chance to win at the last corner, wouldn't you have
tried it?

Not in my view. Checa actually got through cleanly, and was ahead of
Max N when he lost the front. It was just that they were so close
that his crashing bike then took Max's front out. If Max had been a
foot further to the left, he'd have been fine, and taken the win.

As I said, that's racing.

So It's Max's fault for not shutting the door on the entry to that corner?
That's the way I see it.
I also thought Checa got through clean and lost it.
It wouldn't have happened if Max closed the door earlier IMO.

Checa was willing to thow them both away for the sake of getting a
wheel in front. He knew the weaknesses of his tire and the track. We
could have enjoyed a fantastic fast close finish instead of a clownish
wipe-out. Checa would have earned massive applause for a close
second, would still have impressed his team, but no he had to go the
death-or-glory route. Neukirchner was robbed and so were we. And we
get a winnder who knows he did not deserve it.

He did? After setting fastest lap after fastest lap?

Maybe it was the camera angle but aycliffe is right, it did look rather
dim.
Max is on for his debut WSBK win, perfect race, last corner, Checa comes
sailing in missing his apex like nobody's business, silly as you like and
appears to promptly drop it right onto Neukirchner's front wheel in the
most chumptabulous style. And remounts to finish 5th leaving Max with a
broken collarbone.

Or...Checa, in his first season in WSB gets a poor start but sets
fastest lap after fast lap from the middle of the race, and closes
down 4 seconds on the leader in the last 6 laps. Approaching one of
the key overtaking places, Max leaves the door open, so Checa tries a
block pass up the inside - he didn't need to make the apex, he just
needed to occupy the bit of tarmac Max wanted.

That's just the way the chips feel. No one could predict that.

I doubt Max knew he was there - Checa caught him so fast. Max's lap
times dropped by over a second a lap in the last 3~4 laps

If he's known Checa was there, he'd would/should have ridden a
defensive line, preventing the move, I agree.

actually, first glance looked like Simoncelli was the culprit, but
saw an ionterview and replay today that showed is was the lead bike
that had some issue and unexpectedly slowed mid corner and that caused
the collision, in fact, immediately after the crash the two riders
gave a hug while walking out of the gravel, can;t see Bautista doing that
if Simoncelli had just taken him out.

Aha, thanks. I saw the hug but didn't see the report.
