Tim, you have to realize that r.m.r is more guys at the bar watching
racing rather than guys on the track doing racing. Now, some folks here
DO race (Is it Mike doing IoM this year?), some folks HAVE raced, but
primarily it's bench racing.
I don't race. I've never raced. I've gotten a speeding ticket once, tho.
I had a great time both at Fontana and Sonoma this year. Fontana races
were just spectacular (modulo the SSport red flag), and I just love the
Sonoma track. I think they had a great show this year, even tho SB race
2 was just a bore after half way. But that's the way the cookie crumbles.
Hopefully Miller will be just amazing. Talk about bang for your racing
dollar, we get SEVEN races at Miller, if my schedule is right. The full
WSB SB program (SuperPole and 2 races) plus the full AMA program (2 SB
races, FX, SSport, SStock). All on a huge track, TWO courses (3.5 and
4.5 mile courses), and a 3500 foot front straight?
HOT DAMN! What a day in the desert that will be.
Here, it's just an extended family chatting up politics and religion at
the Thanksgiving dinner. We're small, so we're close knit.
And everyone has their opinion. Right ways, wrong ways, side ways and up
ways.
Beyond spectacle, the back room details, the "process" of racing is
important here.
I've always said, that if you don't care about the outcome, the race
isn't interesting -- any race. I can enjoy SB races even if Ben and Mat
win each race. At Sonoma, SB 1 was a good race just watching EBoz and
Yates fight for 4th, while 1-3 paraded. Would Yates have fought harder
if it was for 3rd? Maybe. For first? Probably. But that doesn't make the
4-5 battle any less interesting. Yates was fighting hard for that spot,
and Eric was making himself REALLY wide to keep him off. Good racecraft,
good spectacle.
Hell, I was rooting for Lee Acree in SStock at Sonoma, considering he
qualified so well. And I'll be rooting for anyone but Jake Holden if
continues singing on the podium! :-)
But right now, the future of racing is more of a story than the racing
itself. More politics, more religion. So, this will be an interesting year.
Feel free to stick around tho. All are welcome.
Regards,
Will Hartung
