Yamaha XV750SE/Virago starter query

Yamaha XV750SE/Virago starter query

I know the subject of starters on the early XVs and Viragos is a hot
one but somewhere I read that a worthwhile upgrade was to swap the
standard XV750 starter for a modified XS650 starter. I kept my eyes
open for such a beast, and thought I had found one, but after some
preliminary dismantling the procedure is not obvious.

So, was the original rumour 'misinformation' or have I in fact not
got a proper XS650 starter to attempt the replacement? I have put a
photo of them both at * w w w .deuchars.org.uk/temp/11032008.jpg
and would be grateful for any advice. Oh yes, and the genuine XV one
is on the right! Confirmation of the one on the left as XS650 or
non-XS650 would be a good start (ho ho!). The supplier of the latter
wasn't 100% sure wether it was XS650 or possibly XS750.
