Flash firing but not effective (used to be)

Anyone got any views on this ? It's a digi I aleways carry with me. Just a
compact 3 million pixel job.
An Olympus C350Z which I have had and been happy with for a few years. A

Anyway, yesterday I took a couple of shots with the flash and they were
fine. Only seconds later I took another
of the same subject and the result was dark, although the flash DID fire and
looked intense enough too. I have
since changed the batteries and experimented but when using flash the result
is dark as if the shot has been taken
with a fast shutter speed but no flash has been used. The flash IS firing.

OK I'll get the usual "get a new camera" brigade but the fact is I like the
camera and am used to it. A great thing
for nights out and catching the unexpected.

Anyone seen similar or can suggest what the problem may be ?

Cheers

Woody

Set it up on a tripod or sit it down and don't change the view or
lighting. keep taking pics and you might be able to see something
like a change in the flash. The sync could be sliding off, and not show
any visable change in the flash. In any case what can you do about it ?
Any moisture build up ?
