Is the Olympus C5050 still one of the best non SLR digicams ever?

Is the Olympus C5050 still one of the best non SLR digicams ever?

I have been trying out a range of non SLR cameras, including the
Canon S5, et-al., and so far I have found none that have that
beats it out when you factor in everything.

It hardly ever get red-eyes with the built in flash, runs on
standard AA form batteries, has a remote control, hot-shoe, takes
xD/SM and CF at the same time, has an adjustable back view LCD
and a nice optical sensor.

Is there anything out there that runs on standard AA format
batteries with a hot-shoe that meets or exceeds it, in your
opinion?

I'm just curious.

Thanks

The Fuji S9000 series might also be in the running.

Re: Is the Olympus C5050 still one of the best non SLR digicams ever?

I own a 5050. Sadly, it lost the internal memory.
Whenever I change batteries, I have to plug in an auxil bat source, or
reset the whole thing to my specs afterwards.
So, ...I tried to find a camera like, or better than it.
I bought a canon S3 IS.....bad choice I think now.

I can take my oly 5050 into a completely and totally dark room, and
still shoot a perfect picture. The canon gives me an amber (nothing
doing! P-off light), even in normal - in- room - light, and then just
parks itself there. Pretty much telling me to find a better place to
take a picture. ...What gives? I like to take a picture in a dimly lit
dungeon in a European castle.......The camera lells me .. . it is too
dark here. Should I take a picture of a flowering apple tree instead,
and then use Photo Shop to correct it a tad?
The oly has had no problem focusing in 99% of the situations I
encountered.

The canon, ........just parks there...with the ....can't do it
.. . fr ame,.....and naturally you do not get a picture. Or you do, and
it looks like you just woke up after a cataract operation...and you
find out.. they forgot to put the lens in.

What a bunch of huiiii!

Is there anything that is as good as the oly, or better, since it was
an old model, that I can get, to use for my travels?
Let's not forget the magnesium body, the AA power, the swing out
display screen, full override, top lcd display...many more...I already
forgot about.....and let us not forget about the lens! 1.8 ...!

Cheers, Frank

That's evidently cause by a leaky high value capacitor. It's replaceable.
My Oly C750 has the same problem and most from that era fail eventually.
There's pictures at * w w w .pbase . com /ociepka/750 for the C750 and
* w w w .pbase . com /ociepka/5050 for the C5050.

Thank you so much Steve B,
For posting this link to those very useful pictures.
If I get enough currage up, I will attempt to replace this capacitor
myself. Perhaps I better get the part to begin with.
Sure would be nice to get my Oly back to health.

Thanks again!

Cheers, Frank H
