The spam flood

The spam flood

I notice the spam flood has virtually disappeared from the other four
newsgroups I subscribe to. It only seems to continue on rpd.

I know on one of my groups someone took action somehow to convert all
of those spam message titles to the word "spam", so it may be that
server administrators on host servers may have something to do with
overcoming the flood. Don't know why it is continuing on rpd, but it
would be nice if this group somehow follows what is happening on rest
of Usenet.

It appears that the original poster is using Google Groups to access
rec.photo.digital. Google Groups only provides a crude browser
interface which acts as a gateway to the actual USENET groups.

There are no provisions to filter anything when you use Google's
browser interface.

Until he starts using a real news reading client, there is nothing
he can do to stop the spam.

What is ironic is that just about all the spam we see here comes
from Google Groups. It's no wonder that so many RPD subscribers
filter out all the posts originating from Google.

What's ironic is someone posting from gmail, com complaining about spam.

MY ISP no longer supports Usenet well, and I refuse to pay extra for a
third party news server. I tried a couple of free ones and they were
terrible!

But the point of my original post is that rpd is the ONLY one left
getting this spam. Why is that? Since I use the google interface for
ALL of my groups, that cannot be the reason I get it in rpd and not
the other groups.

Ooops, that first paragraph in my post above should have been:
"I keep my finger on the "Ctrl" key and click on the few offenders
that remain that have escaped my filter in Outlook Express, then hit
the "Delete" key (on a PC). To add blocking words to OE, go to
"Tools", "Message Rules", "News...", then click the box for "New
news rules #1", and click in the area below that, which brings up a
box where you can enter one word or phrase at a time (clicking on
"OK" afterward - but the box remains so you can add another word).
So far, what is in the box reads,"

If you use a filter like News Proxy and have it remove just the Google Group
posts, you will eliminate 99.9% of all of the crud. It's so easy.

And, of course, many news clients can filter GG posts natively, without
the need to use auxiliary software.

And you don't have to keep adding subject keywords. :)

Is there a good clear help file or FAQ or tutorial on NewsProxy somewhere?

News Proxy started out as NFILTER. It's not officially supported anymore
(afaik), but it sure works well.

The key thing to realize is that you have to change your news client's
'server name' to "localhost", and then tell NewsProxy what the true server's
name is. This is what puts NewsProxy in the path of all messages and allows
it to do its filtering.

The next thing is to create the nfilter.dat file. Make sure you don't have
any blank lines in it or it will complain.

Short story: Download & install it (directly under C: fixed an issue for
me), set:

edit > configuration > network

to your newserver (such as news.sf.sbcglobal,net ) then set your news
reader's (OE or thunderbird, etc) server to localhost then:

edit > filters

and paste this one line at the top (delete the rest of the file's
contents if you wish):

* drop Message-ID:*googlegroups*

You can play around more but that's the basic setup.

Besides the suggestions given, for individual questions check into
news.software.readers for assistance. Mention my name.

This subject has been covered several times lately. If you go to Google
Groups (unfortunately, one of the worst offenders) you can see probably
hundreds of suggestions on the subject. For starters, though, if you
will create filters for senders whose addresses contain gmail, google,
126,com , 163,com or .cn, you will reduce the number greatly. I don't
know what news reader you use, but in Thunderbird I put the ones going
through Google in the filters for each individual group (in some groups,
some valuable contributors use it) but I put 126, 163 and cn in the
filter for the entire news system. Good luck!
