Newbie Help

Never cruised before.
I'm a Brit looking to book a Royal Caribbean cruise for August 2009.
It's the "9 Night Bermuda And Caribbean Cruise" itinerary we're looking
at.
No other operator seem to offer sailings in August? Is this due to the
chances of a hurricane occuring?

There are many cruises offered in August ... check out a website like
7blueseas or vacationstogo where you can search easily just by month
and location ...
Be prepared though that it is possible your Bermuda/Caribbean cruise
may become a Canadian cruise if a hurricane prevents you original
itinerary from being sailed safely ...

Canada?
If that happened what sort of alternative itinerary would I be looking
at?

Don't worry about a 1 in 100 chance ... just know it can occur ...
there were several rerouted like that in the past because of
hurricanes not long ago ... often though they will just bypass a port
or two ... or go western carib instead of eastern or vice versa ... to
avoid the storm ... they want a safe comfortable trip ... and that
trumps the itinerary ...
In the rare chance it will happen again ... it will be more or less
the itinerary they will or are doing ... Halifax St John Bar Harbour
Maine Newport RI and the like ...

By small, read extremely small that a cruise would totally relocate. The
usual thing is to avoid the port in peril and then come in behind it if
there is no major destruction or just take a day at sea and continue
withthe preplanned itinerary. The chances are better that you need longer
pants right now than that you will go to Canada.

Re: Newbie Help

It's not a function of hurricane season. Ships move (as opposed to
hotels)... so they can avoid hurricanes, even if (as Number6 said) they take
you to an alternate itinerary - they are not going to take a $600 million
ship with 4000 people into a hurricane. If a hurricane is heading toward
Bermuda, they might just go to the Caribbean. They'll have a lot of
options, since they can move around.

There use to be a number of ships that sailed from NYC to Bermuda. Over the
years the smaller ships that did the run were replaced by larger ships that
don't fit into the tight channels to get into St. Georges or Hamilton. The
big ships must dock at King's Wharf... kind of out at the end of nowhere...
though they are starting to build up that area. So from the 3 ships that
Royal Caribbean and Celebrity (sister company) had from NYC.... now they're
down to 1 ship doing the itinerary every other week. And instead of staying
there the whole 4 days like they used to, the Explorer stays there just 2
days. That's a 5 day itinerary. That leaves 9 days to do the Caribbean
(and add a day in Bermuda if they want to), to complete a 2 week (14 day)
cycle. You of course are looking at the 9 day itinerary.

Why aren't there more ships in NYC in the summer? Good question. Florida
always has a lot of ships... and in the summer most of the ships that leave
Florida move to either Alaska or Europe, where they can get higher rates.

There are lots and lots of cruises in August. But are you more
interested in Bermuda or the Caribbean part? Because there are money
cruises to Bermuda ranging from 5 to 7 days and from various ports all
along the eastern US coast, but not very many that combine it with the
Caribbean and not many as long as 9 days.

One that does is Caribbean Princess
Sailing Date(s): August 4, 13, 2009
Ports of Call: Departs From Brooklyn, New York visiting Royal Naval
Dockyard, West End, Bermuda; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Charlotte Amalie,
St. Thomas; Grand Turk Island

Thanks for that.
I'm looking to a 14 night holiday which would include a cruise to the
Caribbean and a stay in New York City.
So a 9 night Caribbean cruise and a 5 night NYC stay sounds *very* nice.
:-)

Gareth,

As an alternative, consider a cruise to Alaska following the Inside
Passage. I live about an hour outside of Manhattan. In comparison, I
find Seattle and Vancouver more interesting. You could do a seven day
from either Seattle, WA or Vancouver, BC. then follow through with
either a stay in Vancouver, BC or Seattle, WA or split it between the two.

I know it's a much longer flight. The cost for air will be more. But
it's worth it in June through August. In the Summer day temperatures
range from 60ºF to 80ºF. You may actually wear shorts in some locations.
The chance of snow at this time of year is nil. The only guaranteed cold
is by the glaciers.

I know it isn't exactly bask in the sun, drink fruit drinks with funny
decorations in them and go scuba/snorkel. Their are other diversions
like whale watching, touring Dinali Park a vast vast forrest where all
manner of northern critters dwell. You can even view humpback whales and
soaring bald eagles from your ship in some cases. Royal Caribbean does
an Alaska Cruise as does Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, and Carnival.

If not this time see Alaska before global warming and oil drilling
takes all that is Alaska away.
