Disappointed Guests

Hi there i justed to see if you could help us in regards to the disney
cruise that we booked. Disney is not willing to help us out and i woul
dlike to see if this is something that you could help out with. I have
attached below 2 letters that i sent to disney, disney cruise lines
and cruises only. They explain more in detail on what our issues are.
please contact me if you may have any questions. I hope you can help
us out.

Thank you

Hi there, we booked a Disney cruise to Costa Maya for 9/27/08 and now
we just found out that were not going to Costa Maya due to hurricane
dean last year and we now will be going to Grand Caymans. The problem
we have is that Disney advertised this Costa Maya cruise as a special
cruise and we paid more money to go on this cruise ($2400) compare to
if we booked a standard western cruise to Grand Caymans we would only
paid about $2000 a $ 400 difference. Now that we are not going to
Costa Maya I would like to request to get some on board credit due to
the extra money we paid to go onto the special cruise that Disney
advertised. Please contact me as soon as possible on this issue I am
having with Disney cruise line.

To whom it may concern,

The Nolan and Milins families would like to express there feelings
about the cruise that we booked for Sept 27, 2008
My name is Brian Nolan and my family and I (6 people total going on
the cruise 4 adults & 2 children / 2 cabins) have booked a Disney
Cruise for 9/27/2008 which was a special cruise that went to Costa
Maya ( which we paid extra money due to this special cruise). We have
received an email yesterday 6/26/08 stating that the cruise has been
changed and that we will no longer be going to Costa Maya. All 6 of us
are very disappointed that there has been a change and now we are
thinking about canceling and booking thru a different cruise line. We
had booked this cruise back in Nov. 2007 and paid extra money for this
cruise. We had such a great, unforgettable and enjoyable time that we
had last Sept. 2007 on the Disney cruise. All of us that went on the
cruise in Sept 2007 keep thinking and talking about what a great time
we had. We tell everybody that we know who is thinking about going a
cruise that they should go on the Disney. All we do is talk about the
Disney Cruise and how we can’t wait till Sept. 2008 for our next
cruise. We also were going to book again onboard this year for 2009 so
we could take advantage of the savings. Also we requested to have the
2 cabins to be located on the same floor of each other close by and
after getting the cabin assignments we found out there was 1 cabin on
deck 7 room 7509 and the other is down on deck 2 room 2633.We would
prefer to have both rooms on deck 7or 6 or 5. As of right now we feel
that we have been shafted (just a nicer way of saying it) and we are
really serious thinking about canceling this cruise completely and
booking with another cruise line that will go somewhere else besides
Grand Caymans. We will be sure to also tell all our friends and family
as well as everyone we come in contact with that want to go on a
Disney and we will leave some feedback on the experience that we are
having so far this year with this cruise.

I know it's a disappointment. Hurricanes are an "act of God". Cruise
lines do not have the technology to just make them go away. Offering a
postponement really isn't feasible as that may require bumping someone
out of their cabin to accommodate you thereby disappointing them and so
on like dominoes.

If you regard your cruise documents, primarily your contract which is
usually contained in the booklet that held your tickets. You will find
a clause that says that the cruise line can change the ship's itinerary
at the last minute for the safety of the passengers. You wouldn't
expect the ship to sail through a hurricane. That section also spells
out that the cruise line is not required to refund your booking fare, or
provide any compensations. Some cruise lines do offer credit towards
another cruise, shipboard credit on your next cruise. In one instance,
Caribbean cruise passengers' ship was diverted from the Caribbean to New
England in fall or winter. It was a great inconvenience for all. They
haden't packed for cold weather. No guest could tour any ports of call
unless they bought some warmer close at the first store they could
reach. I believe that the cruise line out of good will offered to
reimburse guests for the necessary clothes they bought. All they need
do is send in copies of their sales slips. I don't recall if a prorated
refund was given or full. But this was a very rare occurrence. The cruise
line didn't have to do anything according to their contract. The ship
was diverted from a major hurricane. (I.E.act of God).

Hi Brian,

Maybe I am mistaken but I see nothing about a hurricane in these
letters. Disney just decided to change the itinerary and gave notice
to the clients. This had nothing to do with a hurricane. Check with
your sister the travel agent. <:+) She will tell you cruise lines can
and do notify clients of changes in their itineraries.

You are paying more because you choose to go on Disney. That is what is
special. It has nothing to do with Costa Maya over Grand Cayman.
Cruises that call on Costa Maya do not cost more than cruises that call
on Grand Cayman. In other words calling Costa Maya does not bring about
higher prices than calling on Grand Cayman. Maybe it was worth more to
you to go to Costa Maya than Grand Cayman but either one is a standard
western itinerary.

I don't think you have been shafted and don't understand why you are so
opposed to Grand Cayman. It is a pretty good port. And you won't be
going to Costa Maya if you book with another cruise line as Costa Maya
is not ready yet to reopen and none of the others call there. But if
you want to spend less money by all means cancel your Disney cruise and
book on another cruise line. It is Disney, not the itinerary, not Costa
Maya that caused the Disney cruise you booked to cost more.

Charles, this is a good point. I didn't really pay attention to the
cost bit. I figure people who book Disney cruises know they are paying
premium! We've never cruised Disney for that reason, although I am
sure if we had discovered cruising when the kids were little, we
probably would have bitten the bullet. We have certainly enjoyed, and
continue to enjoy, our land vacations at the Disney parks. No
hospitality provider does customer service better than Disney, IMO. -

Re: Disappointed Guests

Hi, Brian,

Sorry y'all are disappointed, but if you look at your cruise
documents, Disney's site, every cruise line's contract, all of the
online forums, blahblahblah, you will learn that a cruise is just
that: a floating vacation. The cruise line doesn't owe you anything
for a change in itinerary. At least you know in advance. Many times a
cruise changes ports during the cruise...due to hurricanes at that
time and a bunch of other reasons...so you can imagine the
disappointment those on board feel when they don't go to a stop they
were expecting. People have (foolishly) planned shore weddings at port
stops that were never made. Talk about a bummer!

Have you been to Costa Maya? Have you been to Grand Cayman?
Georgetown, Grand Cayman, is a far more popular port stop than Costa
Maya among cruisers because there is so much more to do, thus all
interests are satisfied. Costa Maya is little more than a glorified
beach stop and a long, hot, bumpy bus ride to some ruins that aren't
very well preserved or presented. Don't get me wrong--I like Costa
Maya. But I think if you took a poll, most would vote Grand Cayman
over Costa Maya.

Note, irony of ironies, Grand Cayman is, actually, a frequently missed
port because it is a tender port subject to the condition of the seas.
Because you are, in fact, traveling during hurricane season (and are
no doubt paying a more reasonable rate for sailing during hurricane
season), you should be aware going in that in the event of a storm,
your entire cruise could be cancelled, delayed at the start or delayed
at the end, or you could miss one port or you could miss all ports and
end up on a "cruise to nowhere." But that's all the cruise line
promises: a bed, food and entertainment at sea!

Don't know when final payment is due, but if you can rearrange without
penalty, you might want to consider that option. Otherwise, I suggest
you start reading the Grand Caymen discussion board at http :// www .cruisecritic, com
and plan your day. I'd take the stingrays!

Disney is supposed to offer a fabulous cruise experience! You will be
lucky to enjoy it a second time. Hope y'all get this worked out.

Re: Disappointed Guests

You missed the point, apparently the Costa Maya port is closed
due to hurricane damage. The bozo OP wants Disney to compensate
him for something that is completely out of their control. And
check out this page:

http :// www .cruisecritic,com /news/news.cfm?ID=2669

Nothing will be there until the end of October. So if he insists
on being on a cruise that stops there, he should change to a
later cruise. And since he has not made his final payment, he
should just cancel and move onto another cruise line if he
doesn't like the price anymore.

Re: Disappointed Guests

Brian,

As you can see from just about all the responses, you really can't blame
Disney for this decision. Every cruise line and every brochure has very
similar policies in this reference. Itineraries are subject to change; for
either the safety of their passengers, and/or other reasons. Likewise, as
also pointed out, at least cruise lines have the option of changing an
itinerary, if they feel it necessary and beneficial, unlike that of a hotel.

My wife Deborah and I have been on many cruises, where a certain ports was
either skipped and/or substituted for another. I'm sure others on this
newsgroup had similar experiences as well. That's just the nature and
benefits of a cruise. This can be a positive or negative thing, all
depending on how one wants to look at it. Naturally, if you were counting on
a particular port, and that was changed for whatever reason, you may be
indeed be disappointed.

My suggestion is to make the best of it. Likewise, you certainly can't blame
Disney for such a decision. And don't fault any cruise line, including
Disney, for following set procedures which has already been outlined in
their brochures or online procedures.

An itinerary change from Costa Maya to Grand Caymans because of hurricane
damage last year, while may be a disappointment to you personally, does make
a lot of sense in the scheme of things. Likewise, one would have to research
and evaluate the price comparisons of one Disney cruise over another to see
the real price differences. Furthermore, not everything has to do with
select ports, but the season as well. However, you will find many people on
this newsgroup claiming that Disney is more expensive than the other cruise
lines. Yet, this is really just perspective. If one shops around enough,
they can usually find a lower price from another agency on just about
anything. Some even have no problem cancelling with one booking, after that
agency did all the work and research, simply because they feel they can save
a few bucks somewhere else. That's why more and more agencies are changing a
cancellation fee. By the way, we don't.

If this had been another cruise line, and ports had been switched, I feel
you would be saying the very same thing. Actually Disney is a very good and
popular cruise line, if fact, my wife and I sailed on the Disney Magic for a
7-day Eastern Caribbean cruise not long ago. Disney, or any other cruise
line is what you make out of it. Don't be too disappointed because things
change. Make the best of it, and don't expect anyone to compensate you for
what the cruise line feels is necessary.

John,

You're saying Disney's pricing is perspective? I don't understand how
you can say, that like for like, that Disney is not higher than the
majority of the major cruise lines. It's not perspective.

Is it worth it? If you can afford it, Hell yeah. That last comment is
perspective.
