Jewel OTS trip report (Long)

I went through and patched together the various missives that my
Youngest Daughter Courtney sent to friends and families during our
British Isle, Fjords With A Couple Extra Places Thrown To Make It
11-Days In Length cruise.
Most of these were done on the boat with Dad pacing behind her
mumbling things about how we only have xxx minutes of Internet time
left. That, combined with the rather clunky keyboards on RCCL ships in
general, lead to all the mistakes. The Kid is Perfect.. That comes up
her Mother's side.
Because this was for family & friends, there are some references
that might confuse the Casual Reader. Live with it.
So, without further ado, herewith The Ullman Vacay-'08.
---
I wanted to keep you all update on our travels
throughout Europe and what better day to start then day I.

Tom-(our new best friend/Limo driver) came to pick us
up for the Ullman's European Tour 08. (Mom took video
if you would like to watch it!) All smiles as we jump into
the limo. It was dad's first limo ride. BOY WAS HE
EXCITED. We loaded up 7 suitcases all (according to
dad's weight watchers scale) equaled less then 50lbs.

We pull out of the house with dreams of seeing
Big Ben and the Parliament in just 12 hours. As we reached
the Kingswood sign we look back a wave goodbye to all those
people that aren't going to Europe. Little did we
know...Soon it would be us!

As we approached Grey Road, a bad word which I will
not repeat came out of my dad's mouth. Thanks to
technology these days dad got a text saying our flight is
cancelled. The smiles drop from our faces.

"Well, what are we supposed to do?" mom
asked the America Airlines rep on the other end of the
phone. We are pretty sure it was her first day there. She
tells us there is nothing she can do. We could fly out
tomorrow through TX or through Miami. Mama picks Miami b/c
if we are getting stuck someplace it's going to be close to
the keys!

So day one didn't come out as plan. But, being
Ullman's we believe in fate...Fate made us miss out on
a day of London and seeing Wicked, so I'm a little
pissed at Fate, but its fate all the same!

So Tom is coming back at noon tomorrow to start Day 1
(2) So, by Sunday my dad should be yelling "Hey kids
look, Big Ben/Parliament"!" or "There is Hard
Rock, The "mothership"

Stay tuned for the adventures of Europe 08!

--
This is day 1/2/3 whatever you want to call it. I hope you
enjoy our letters of adventures but please realize due to
the price of the Internet and my dad's need to tell me
to hurry up, there will be no proof reading. IF you cant
understand either guess or make up your our part to the
story!

As we got to our parents house for the SECOND day in a row,
we realized our limo driver was not our beloved Tom but
Omar. At first we were disappointed but Omar had all the
personality of Tom with better driving skills. Momo got to
relax a little and her knuckles weren't so white on the
ride to the airport. WE made it out of the neighborhood and
let a sigh of relief no text message telling us our flight
had been cancelled. The sky was blue and Miami were we
come. Passing Michigan Road, we realized that we made it
further today then yesterday and all smiled.

We made it to the airport with all seven bags and our four
carry ons.

As we are checking in I tell the fam, "This is my
dream vacy, they should up grade me to first class!"
Heather processes to ask me if I think I'm a
make-a-wish child. I tell her I don't have to be dying
to dream....Fair enough.

As we check in we realize that Connie at the counter IS
NOT up for employee of the month. With her not my problems
and So's? we realized that if we need help, Connie is
not the one to ask and make our way to tour gate

Heather was a little worrried at the size of the plane (or
the lack there of) But she was a trooper all the way. We
got to Miami with out a bump in the sky.

As we bored the plane to London, Heather gasped with
excitement, only for me to tell her this is business class
and we are flying economy! WE squeeze into our seats
wondering if the next time mama will cough up the extra
dough!

After an uneventful smooth trip, we landed in London. John
picked us up looking every bit of the English gentleman...

10 things we learned about London.....

1. London eye is A LOT higher then it looks.
2.Scraves are SOOOOO in right now
3 Very few people in London actually have British accents
4.Rainbow flags mean peace, not that you're gay!
5. St James Park is not a short cut to the Hard Rock
6.You have to watch your step b/c there is horse shit
EVERYWHERE
7. The guy that runs the "Vault" at the Hard
Rock...Looks like Harry Potter and is in love with Jimmy
Page. He also claims to know everything about music AND had
never heard of Indiana.
8.Dad can't/ read a map. He will ask for directions,
but doesn't listen to them
9. Dad and Heather Hate scarf watch 08
10. The Prez G-Dubs is not a popular in the UK

NOT SO QUIET RIOTS

At the beginning of the day, there were "protests"
in London. By protests, I mean four tents of people. After
being up for 24 hours, Heather and Dad go to bed but mom
and I am not done with our adventures! So we went back
out. Adventure is what we got. We went to enjoy Big Ben,
etc. We realize that the protesting had gone from 10 to
100s. This was closed so mom stood in the middle of it
and did some "eye witness" news for the video
camera. During our exclusive we notice an abundance of
rainbow color flags and I hate George Bush signs. We mom
and I decided the protest was Lesbians that hate GWB.
As the crowd got louder and louder, we notice there were
only four cops or as dad like to call them. Bobbies. We
were in over our heads and overdue for some sleep. We went
back to the hotel and crashed!

After we ate our breakfast buffet (which included baked
beans?) John picked us back up in the morning and we left
for Harwick. I was going to try to stay up to see the
sights, but I realized that it look a lot like I69 and fell
asleep only to wake to a beautiful boats.

Bonjour-NO

Unfourtunately we realize that Paris was on strike. Well not
all o f Paris but the part were you dock. It's another
set back-we are going to France just not Pair. A place that
no one has ever heard of including the staff. So I'm sad
to say...we will never have Paris!

But on a brighter note. At the welcome party I won
(according to rob from Ky) a very large piece of art work!@
Which of course made mom jealous b/c she is the winner in
the family. We've explored the ship and went to the
send off party.

I realize as I sit here watching the sunset over the Baltic,
somewhere between Harwick and Dover...I realize we might not
have Paris, but this is still the trip of a lifetime!

--
This will be the last e-mail that I right in my 20s...Sad
but true!

Anyway, the Internet has be sooo hard to go on so I'm
going to give you a brief update on our travels thus far.
Remember I'm typing fast and with little time so there
will be a lot of typos. Just remember....try to figure it
out or just make something up!

We ended up in Cherbourgh France. It was a really cute
little town that doesn't really see much tourist
action. But still was beautiful!

Highlights of Cherbourgh-

1. They take 2 and 1/2 hour lunches. During this time the
eat bread and drink wine.....lets me honest that just
rocks!

2. They had THE best farmers market I have ever seen. They
green beans were the size of cucumbers and the cherries
were insanely red.

3. WE found out there are people out there more sac
religious then us. Why we sat around debating if you can
take pictures in a church (you can) another family had
their video camera out taping each other "preach"

4. Of course in France scarves are soooo in!

After our time in France we were headed for Plymouth
England. We woke up to the captain telling us...that
ain't happening. There was a bad storm coming in and we
could not tender into Plymouth. There were 35-40 ft swells
and the wind was up to 40mph and it was not a good day for
the people whom easily get motion sick!

Highlights for things to do while hauling ass out of the
Celtic Sea-

1. Not be disappointed that you are missing a reenactment of
D-day practice

2. Eat....They say you gain 2 lbs a day on a cruise...they
are might just be right

3. Bingo

4. Gamble, Gamble Gamble

After the unexpected day at sea we headed on to Cohab
(cork) Ireland....This was the last port the Titanic sailed
from...Just a fun fact.

Highlights of Cork

1. It is sooo lush and green, it's just how you picture
Ireland being.

2. They also love the scarves and take 2-hour lunches...

3. we kissed the blarney stone..,it worked we all now have
the gift of gab

4. Cork is 40% 30 somethings....YEAH I'm going back

After that, we traveled on to Dublin...Dublin was more
industrialized then we expected. It was the lush green of
cork, but it was really cool.

!. There was a lot more traffic then we would have thought!

2. Scarves are sooo in

3.The doors in are all different colors it looks soooo cool

4.St Patrick's Cathedral sells shot glasses....that
rocks

5, Having a Guinness in Ireland is in no way
over-rated....not even close!

Scotland was next and thus far our favorite! It was even
more beautiful then you could have imagined seeing in
movies and pictures.

1. It was green and lush, they said it was drought season
so I can't imagine how beautiful it is when it rains...

2.They ferry ride was amazing
?
3. The lochs- we didn't see the loch ness monster...but
would you believe me if I said I did?
4. There was never a bad view...not matter where you
looked it was always beautiful...

Today is our day at sea....We have already

1. been in a slot tourney....Mom came in third

2. Ate, Ate, Ate

Now it is nap time!

This isn't even 1/100 of what we have been doing, but
Dad would kill me if I took time to write it all. It has
been nothing but amazing set backs and all! ON to Norway!
Love you all!

--
I only have 10 mins on my card so here is the low down on
Norway....Sorry about typos and errors....If you can't
figure it out make it up!

Norway was more then amazing and beautiful....If it was
only 30 degrees warmer I would have sworn I was in heaven!

Flam Highlights...

1. We missed a landslide by mins... the landslide occurred
right after our train had left the station!

@ There were no fish heads on the buffet....mom and I
worried

3. I got to drink from the fountain of youth on my 30th
b-day...that rocked

4. The myths of trolls dragons and women with tails...

I personally took over 125 pictures...so I will be sure to
fill you in out the beauty that I cannot even begin to
describe!

The next day we went to asluand norway on our own...

It was a lot less beautiful and had a lot more people
around.

Highlights....

A lot of shopping... but no tourist traps :)

Meeting a lot of friendly people.

sneaking into a Norwegian hotel to use the bathroom...

getting massages and facials with the beautiful view of the
fjords

Bergen...

Was everything you think a European city would be....

Little shops and cafes....

A fish market that sold just about everything!

There was a square were the people ate lunch and watch a
man (my future husband) play the piano..,it was soo
amazing...

I would tell everyone to go to Norway..,it is a hidden
treasure for sure!

For everyone that complains about daylight savings time
(Stef Jones) The sunsets at 12:00am and is rising again by
4:00am....so be grateful our sun goes down...

I will fill you guys in on more when I get home....:) We
are leaving for Windsor at 6:30am and will be arriving home
at midnight! I have had the trip of a lifetime and I will
be back to Europe hopefully sooner then later.////

Love you all

Re: Jewel OTS trip report (Long)

Thank you Kurt and also to your daughter, Courtney.
I have no idea what age Courtney truly is but her journaling was fun
to read.
Her expressions of wonder, awe and delight came through and I chuckled
throughout.
Priceless!

part of the reason for this trip was C's 30th Bday. That and her
sister's 32nd and Kay and I's 35 wedding anniversary.

She is fabulous. This is easily one of the most fun reviews ever, certainly
more fun to read than most of ours.

So you didn't get to see Geiranger Fjord? If not, you missed a GOOD one...

They never mentioned which one it was. Flam was the "port" and they
said it was the longest Fjord we were in.

You did get to take the railway? It was one of my favorite experiences,
loved the stop at the falls and the tunnel,

Yep and Yep. Actually sorta interesting sidelight that C touched on.
We went through a couple of the tunnels on the way up. Those further
back in the train were talking about a loud noise they heard as we
passed through. Come to find out talking to those who were doing the bus
up and the train back, that there was a cave-in and the train wouldn't
be running for awhile. Seems like it was caving in as we were leaving.
Given the earlier hoohas, it was about time our luck changed. (g).
Pulling into Flam was an experience itself. I was on the balcony
drinking my morning tea and enjoying the view when the ship all of a
sudden stopped and began backing up.
I looked around and did not see anything. "Hmm," I said to myself,
"The capt must have missed a turn and we are backing up to make it.
Who'd a thunk it?"
About that time I noticed the ropes going out to the tie-downs
and figured that this strip of concrete was our port. I think the Jewel
had more tonnage in her superstructure than the entire town had in its.
(g).

That would be Flam LOL, If he went further he would be tieing up at the
train station. Geiranger is around the bend from Flam famous for the seven
veils water falls and about a zillion troll dolls.

Geiranger is not exactly "around the bend" from Flaam... it's on a whole
different fjord. Further to the north. At least a whole day away. The
fjord that Olden is on is between Geiranger and Flaam.

Re: Jewel OTS trip report (Long)

Geiranger is a small town at the end of another fjord, called Geirangerfjord
(also Storfjorden on maps). It's slightly north of the fjord that ends at
Flaam. Alesund is at the mouth of Geirangerfjord (Storfjorden). If your
ship didn't stop at Geiranger, I thought maybe they'd at least offered an
excursion that went there.

Some good photos of Geiranger (a few in case they don't all work):

When we did our fjords sailing (Celebrity) a few years ago, we didn't go
into the fjord that Flaam is on (Sognefjorden). We went to Geiranger and
Olden (on Nordfjord) instead.

Next summer we're going to both Flaam and Geiranger on our North Cape/Fjords
sailing on Crown Princess.

What a joy to read, Kurt! Thank you (and your daughter). Like others
said, it is so much fun to hear such fresh and vivid descriptions and
spontaneous reactions. And I have to say, I admire your family for
maintaining a persistenly positive outlook. It can be tough to rock
and roll with travel glitches, and y'all certainly had more than your
fair share this trip. But what troopers! Y'all are A1 travelers, for
sure.

Kurt, I have to agree with Diana. Thank your daughter for me.
