Why do 'Gift Shop' slides fade so much?

Why do 'Gift Shop' slides fade so much?

Thirty years ago, in the early days of my film photography, I purchased
a number of these 'Gift Shop' slide sets at various tourist attractions.
They have been stuck away in a box and I have probably never looked at
them since the day I bought them. Since I am currently going through a
MAJOR house cleaning, I came upon them again.

Without exception, EVERY single transparency is faded so far into the
magenta that is virtually useless. I tried scanning a few and I
couldn't get them to look even remotely decent, so I threw them out.

I had both Kodachrome & Ektachrome slides of my own stored in the same
box, and they still look perfect.

Why did the store-bought slides fade so much?

Gary

Hi Gary.

Did you find out the make of film used for the Gift Shop slides?

I heard of two lots of slides from the early 1950s. The lot done on Kodak
film was fine whereas the lot done on another make of film had faded very
badly.

Regards, Ian.

No, I threw the slides out without opening them up to see what kind of
film it was. I am still going through other boxes, so I may come upon
more in the future.
