Online booking of UK trains

Online booking of UK trains

I've just discovered that the Trainline and Scotrail sites no longer
accept non-UK cards for online bookings. I've never had problems
before, but I've just got off the phone with what passes for a helpline,
and have been assured that it is no longer possible.

ScotRail Telesales was happy to accept a US-based card, though.

That's a poor show. What about virgin trains? They use the same booking
engine as Trainline, but there are differences- for example they don't
add the card surcharge! I use them now instead of trainline...

I haven't tried them - yet.

I was really annoyed by the whole thing. I needed to book a ticket for
a US-based relative who'll be arriving at Edinburgh airport and going
directly to Waverly, picking up his tickets from the machine at the
station. I could have booked using my Royal Bank card, but I won't be
there, and they want the card that the booking was made with.

The ScotRail site says that they no longer accept registration of those
outwith the UK, but that if you've already registered, you can continue
to use the site. They lied.

It's appalling- no need for it IMO...

In March this year one of my relatives in Australia was able to buy
London-York train tickets from there online, but couldn't get them
delivered to an address outside the UK. The ticket cost was about
UKP150, but buying the same ones via a local travel agent would have
cost about UKP600.

So they gave my address details for delivery instead - clearly delivery
didn't have to be to the cardholder's address - and I mailed the tickets
onward from London.

Can the outsider not simply put the tickets into "will call" to
be picked up at a rail station once in the UK?

I booked a York-London trip from the US and picked up the tickets from the
machine at the station just before the trip. You have to have the same
credit card you used to charge them.

Sounds like extremely expensive tickets ? London-York is 303km only

Depends how many people tickets were being bought for. The price of
London-York tickets will vary a _lot_, depending on how far you book in
advance to whether or not you buy a walk-up peak ticket...

I can't see them costing double from a travel agent.

That sounds like a rip off.

You'd be better off just walking into the station and buying a ticket.

Er, I easily can. Go to a dumb site like raileurope, com (which a foreign
travel agent would use!) and check the following (I chose this randomly,
but allowed for enough time for a deal on advance booking.)

Single ticket- London-Edinburgh, June 4

Buying via http :// www .nationalexpresseastcoast, com

£14 on several trains on the day

Buying via http :// www .raileurope,com /

£110 (roughly) on those same trains.

Get the picture now?

Or booking in advance...

The tickets were for a family of at least three people.

They were booking from Australia, so walking into the station wasn't an
option. They also wanted to reserve seats, something that I doubt would
be guaranteed on the day.

Another poster mentioned the possibility of collecting the tickets from
a station on arrival, but I presume that service wasn't offered. In fact
I don't know if a collection service is offered by all the train
operating companies, or just some.
