Cyprus road touring question

Cyprus road touring question

Hi in my last trip I met a Briton who used to live in Cyprus, and he
related that there were/are restrictions on crossing the Greek/Turkish
border thing. I don't want to get into political definitions over
'border', pls bear with me.

So if I brought in my own car (actually, a new European-delivered
Porsche that will be shipped home to America when I've finished my
touring) via car ferry what kind of frustrations or paperwork would I
need to cross Greek-Turkish and Turkish-Greek? I really want to visit
Famagusta but I hear of great stuff in the south and west as well.

Thanks!

I would be careful before trying to ship a car to or from Cyprus. As far as I
know there are still no car ferries going to Cyprus from anywhere in Europe.
So the only way you could get your car would be to take a flight yourself,
and arrange to have the car shipped separately. This would be fraught with
problems and I'm sure expensive. (Some friends of mine shipped a car back to
Britain from Cyprus a few years ago and it arrived minus a radio.)

If you're determined to go to Cyprus, cars of all kinds are easy to rent
(personally I would not bother with Cyprus at all). Incidentally, traffic in
(Southern) Cyprus drives on the left like in the UK. I don't know if you're
happy with that.

I agree about skipping Cyprus, it's a nice enough place to visit, but
difficulties in reaching it by car probably would outweigh your
enjoyment of it. There's plenty enough to do driving around Europe
without making a detour to an Asian island.

In the summer there are lots of car ferries to Cyprus from the Athenian port
of Piraeus. In the winter I think they only run once or twice a week. However,
you are much better off renting when you get there if you are spending less
than a week.

This site covers most Greek ferry companies. http :// www .ferries.gr/ The only two
that went to Cyprus from Greece are Poseidon and Salamis. Both Poseidon and
Salamis websites say they have suspended their services to Cyprus.
I think we had this discussion last year too.

I see. They must have started running quite recently. Where did you find this
information?

aha!

I am a little surprised NO car ferries go to Cyprus, but the driving on
the left does not, I guess.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll have to leave Cyprus to a separate
2-week trip and hire a car.

I crossed the border in 2004, but not with a car (just on foot at the Ledra
palace hotel). The procedure when you bring your car is that you have to
buy an "insurance" for the car at the ceckpoint. I don't remember how much
it was, but it was rather cheap (something in the range of 20 EUR?).
Problem ist, that you'll have to deal with that insurance in case you have
an accident. If they don't pay, you'll have to sue them at a court in
Northern Cyprus - in a country, that is not fully recognised by most other
countries. So chances are rather slim that you'll see money.

Especially with an expensive car like a Porsche I would say - just forget
it! Invest the 20 or 30 EUR a day and get a taxi and driver (they hang out
just across the border) and let them drive you around. This way you also
have a guide.

Because then you just cross the border on foot, which is no problem at all.
Show your passport, get a little registration-card, and unregister again in
the evenig. No problem, no big paperwork, no long wait. Just remember that
the Greeks don't like it when you bring big shopping back from the North
(clothes are dirt cheap there), and you could end up paying for the things
you want to bring over the border (at least that was my impression when I
went).

Regards,

Frank

Wow, that's pretty reasonable. I will have to consider that.

Are there car hire places close to either side of the border i.e. walk
across, rent a car for the day or days, and return it and walk back
over?

No, I haven't noticed any car hire places on the turkish side, only the
taxis.
