British pilot who 'buzzed' Bush ranch to be deported

By James Macintyre
Wednesday, 7 May 2008

A British amateur pilot on a round-the-world flight faces being
deported from the US after he landed near George Bush's ranch in
Texas, where he had wanted to thank the President for his earlier
rescue by the US Coast Guard.

Maurice Kirk, 63, who is nicknamed the "Flying Vet", was rescued from
sharks in February when his Piper Cub light aircraft went down on the
Caribbean leg of his trip.

Mr Kirk, from south Wales, was arrested on Saturday as he tried to pin
a thank-you note to the President's front gate. He was taken in
handcuffs to a psychiatric hospital in Austin, the capital of Texas.

After being released from the unit, he was then arrested for "walking
around town aimlessly" with a petrol can. His wife, Kirstie, 48, said
he was now being held in a deportation centre after turning down the
option of voluntarily returning to the UK.

Mrs Kirk has been updating a blog devoted to the pilot at www .kirkflyingvet.com.
On it, she wrote: "I was told that he was invited to a restaurant for
a beer (probably Thursday evening). He said he was outside sitting on
a bench with other people, when he was picked up by the police. (This
is in line with the information I initially received via the Foreign
Office.)

"Police stated that he had been seen walking around town aimlessly
with a gas can. [Mr Kirk] believes that the Secret Service traced him
to this location by him using his credit card and the public
intoxication charge was used to hold him until the Secret Service
arrived." Mrs Kirk, from St Donats, in the Vale of Glamorgan, added:
"He was given the opportunity for Secret Service to drive him to the
airport for a flight to London, and would not be deported.

"But he did not want the charges on his record for offences he did not
commit. When he refused, they shackled him in hand and ankle cuffs and
chains, and took him to the deportation centre in Houston."

Mrs Kirk – who is a vet like her husband – added that she was
"humbled" by the public's support. "Most have responded warmly to his
latest scrape though he has clearly exasperated some people."

But how could a private pilot "buzz" the ranch of the most powerful
leader in the world?!
Clearly, the airforce must have received some sort of "stand down"
order, and no doubt "Kirk's" Super Cub was in fact a disguised
military aircraft. I'm sure a controlled demolition was involved
somewhere too.

I've met Maurice a few times - he was our local vet (treated our dogs
a few times) and a fairly regular face at the Flying Club... nice
chap,on the whole.

I've been past the ranch on a bicycle, more than once. There is nothing on
the road telling someone which property belongs to anyone. You just have to
know in advance and the average person wouldn't know. At the gate, you
cannot see any buildings. They're that far away! You can stand at the gate
and look around, but you will see nothing but acres of rolling pasture.

The Secret Service have a compound a little closer to town, and you sure can
tell what that is from all of the activity, but, get a grip here: George
Bush was not there! Why on earth would the USAF fly planes over ranch land
when nobody is there? To protect the mesquite bushes?

As for the"town", that is stretching it a bit, too. This is a small group of
buildings along a farm to market road out in the plains. I don't even
remember seeing a stop light. We stopped at the local church for a rest
break---I was riding in the Waco Wild West 100 bicycle charity ride they
have every year in October. One of the attractions for the bicycle ride is
that it goes "past the Western White House." But, realistically, the better
benefit of that ride is that it stops at the Mars Candy Bar factory in Waco.

Please get over your impression that the word "ranch" evokes. This property
is nothing but a few thousand acres of pasture, woodland, and maybe a creek
or two. There are no herds of cattle or cowboys or anything of that sort.
It's more like a country retreat than a working ranch.

Now, walking into "town" carrying a gas can? What is the purpose of that?
It's eccentric behavior that might be thought of as normal in England, but
this is a sleepy hamlet with no foot traffic at all.

Nothing to see here, folks, move right along.

There's no gas station in that town.

Yes, Mike. No gas station, just a small collection of houses along a farm to
market road. Just one little cafe.

Sory Pat - It was a tongue in cheek comment alluding to the 11/9
Konspiract Krowd..

Errrr.. to get some petrol to take back to your vehicle which stopped
due to lack of petrol, thus forcing you to use your legs? presumably,
a Piper Cub won't fit on your average forecourt either..
