Since everyone got all obtuse on you, I'll respond...
As ever, knowing what YOU like to do helps others give meaningful
advice. If the Dalmatian coast is your goal - do it! It's rather long
and you may want a car hire if you treasure privacy and flexibility.
GoogleMap or GoogleEarth the coast. At the southern extreme, Dubrovnik
inhabits a small island of Croatia-ness separated from the main
country by about 5 miles' worth of Bosnia. Once you cross Bosnia, it's
north to Makarska and Split.
North of that, the islands can be viewed from the beach or visited as
an off-coast adventure. While it is not near the coast and requires a
50 mile excursion inland, I think Plitvice Lakes is worth the effort.
You'll get to see the bucolic vistas of central Croatia as well as one
of the most beautiful nature hikes in all of Europe.
From Plitvice, you can head due west to Senj to rejoin your coastal
adventure. Then it's north to Rijecka/Opatija and on to the Istrian
peninsula. I haven't traveled Istria, so others should chime in on
that.
Croatia has been the "Next Big Thing" in European travel for good
reason. It's beautiful, it's quirky and it's still affordable. Of
course, the language is impenetrable, and you won't find smiling
hordes of English-speaking Croats happy to help you at every turn.
Croats aren't as stern as the Russians, but they aren't as friendly as
the Irish. Like many post-Soviet countries, don't expect much and
savor what little you do get in terms of human kindness.
That's my $.02. You can now go back to your regularly scheduled
bickering. Thank you.
