You dont exhibit great knowledge of the British countryside. I was looking
at the site of Brunels atmospheric project just the other day, not to
mention the disused GW line at Lydford.

I'm not commenting on the boring experience of being on a train, I'm
talking about being in contact with the rural areas we are talking about
via minor roads. Railway lines, like motorways and canals usually take the
line of least resistance through river valleys to avoid the inclines which
they cannot cope with well and/or avoiding expensive cuttings/tunnels.

I know where they run and where they don't run, thats is the issue. Its of
no consequence how often I use trains but for the record Ive travelled many
obscure railway lines in the past, sorry if it doesnt fit your stereotype.

Yawn. I go to the countryside quite a lot. I just don't take a car,
thanks.

It was still countryside, and we enjoyed ourselves. I don't see the
problem.

of course you enjoyed yourself, the *point* was you are not an expert on
landscape beauty based on a stroll up a small hill just outside a tourist
honeypot hill lovers avoid like the plaque . From everything you say you
are a city person, nothing wrong with that. However, you say a lot of stuff
about cars which isn't applicable to those whose priorities are elsewhere.

The "scenic route" between Edinburgh and south-west Scotland
via Moffat is the only road in Britain that's made me carsick.
Enjoyment didn't feature very much.

I tried using this site but can't find Manchester on the list of
stops. Am I doing something wrong with it?

Looks as though there are no direct services on Megabus between
Edinburgh/Manchester.
You could do Edinburgh/Glasgow/Manchester. A bit further round, but the
Edinburgh/Glasgow services are very frequent.

Looks like megabus is the way to go from Edinburgh to Manchester and
then to London. We can rent a car for a day while in London just to
get out of the city. Thanks a lot.

You can get out of the city without renting a car.

I've spent only two days in the Lake District, never staying overnight.
I'm not sure exactly what experience I was meant to have. Is there a
certificate you get or something?

you could try visiting it and other mountain areas on a regular basis and
getting to know the people who live there before pontificating on car use,
rather than exchanging pathetic snide comments with twits.
