OT - How disappointing it must have been!

The chance for many to hold the Olympic torch was ruined by politics.
I've been watching television and anticipating seeing the run through
San Francisco. Instead, it was a drive since protestors along the
route are making the event too dangerous.

The closing ceremony at Justin Herman Plaza on the Embarcadero coming
up, so maybe there still is something the rest of us can enjoy.

Re: OT - How disappointing it must have been!

Thank goodness some of the people get to carry the torch down Van
Ness. From what I can see, most of the SFPD are out there guarding
the torch and the people.

I haven't been down to San Francisco in years, so I'm trying to get a
picture in my mind of where the changed route is. For the last hour
I've been going from one SF television channel to another and wishing
I could have been down there to see the torch in person. There
probably, however, are hundreds of people there upset because of the
change in the route.

I'm looking at the phalanx of police around the torch bearers and
wonder what they are holding. Earlier I saw police with guns on top of
buildings near the bay, which made me very sad. Do any of you reading
this post of mine remember some of the more peaceful torch runs in the
past? One that comes to mind is when Mohammad Ali made that last part
of the run years ago.

I have so many good memories of past Olympics that I hope I'll get
some from the upcoming one in China in four months.

I find it interesting they want to punish the poor athletes that work so
hard and have us boycott the Olympics but full speed ahead for the
corporations that do business there -- no boycott of their business
practices. If they want to boycott then boycott the opening ceremonies but
NOT the games. For crying out loud don't ruin it for the athletes. If you
boycott it for them then make the corporations boycott them for business!
(That will NEVER happen) so damn it don't punish the athletes.

This whole things sounds vaguely similar to all the arguments that were
flying around the Berkeley Co-Op before it crashed because the
membership could never decide whether they were going to be a grocery
store or a political movement.
