Express Scribe

Express Scribe

Man...I haven't seen this group in YEARS!!! Used to be a regular WAYYY
back...and I recognize a lot of names that are still here. Nice!! I have a
??...re Express Scribe. My SO's computer had to be restored to original
settings, and he had to DL new everything. We use Express Scribe.
Well...apparently the NEW version does not play some of the files we need it
to play...specifically DSS files (I think that's Olympus?). I have the
converter program SWITCH, but it too says it no longer converts those files.
MY version of Express Scribe (v 4.15) plays them just fine. He's
frantically searching for a site that still has the OLDER version (help
sites say there are places online, but we have not found them).

any suggestions?

thanks!!

Jody

Re: Express Scribe

Jody,
If you check out the boards on the NCH site about Express Scribe you'll
see people have been complaining about this since last fall. I tried all
the fixes suggested, installing an older version, using switch, etc.
Nothing worked. I finally gave up and purchased the program from
Transcription Gear because I needed a program on my laptop to transcribe
the dss files. I have Express Scribe on my desktop which I installed
several years ago and it works fine, but even trying to install that
same version on my laptop did not work. I have no clue why but many,
many disappoined previous Express Scribe users just gave up. I didn't
like having to buy another program, but now that I have been using the
Transcription Gear program I do love it and it comes with a little USB
dohickie that you can use in any of your computers/laptops...just one at
a time, but that's fine with me.

He probably just needs to install the CODEC for the DSS files.

Write ES and ask them where you can get it.

Hopefully, as Julie said, you just need the right CODEC. Seems to me,
though, a friend had a problem and I emailed her my setup files from a
prior version and it helped - but I may be dismembering that fact (how
was that, Neal?). Anyway, glad to send those setup files along to you
email if you want to try it.

I agree.

It's not an Express Scribe problem.

You have to have the CODEC for the type of file you want to listen to.

Re: Express Scribe

There is a discussion board on NCH site where many, many people have had
this same problem. They have the code on their site available to
download, which was on of their suggestions, but that didn't help
either. I hope you are able to solve it without having to buy a new
program, but I doubt it. Read the message board at NCH Express Script
for more information.

Re: Express Scribe

Yeah, we spent hours last night reading the message boards and cking out
other sites etc. I have had 2 people tell me they MAY have the old version
on disk. I tried emailing him the files that were in my ExpressScribe
directory, but of course, there are files in windows somewhere that I don't
know the names of that would be necessary.

On a side note....those who first responded WERE the very same people I was
referring to whom I recognized!!!

and re Gear Player...does that play DSS files? I wasn't sure that it does
.....I had that years ago and really liked it.

Thanks for all the help!!

Re: Express Scribe

Jody,
Yes Gear Player plays the DSS files without any problem. Rae had
emailed an older version and there were several availabe on the NCH site
and nothing worked. I spent weeks trying to get it to work before my
vacation when I needed my laptop and finally gave up. I am very happy
with Gear Player.

ok....searching now, but it looks like it's $90??? man..this is all adding
up so quickly. we're having to buy
new everything. It's just amazing. You would think Olympus or Express
Scribe would offer a patch or
something?

thanks!

The Express Scribe I have, version 4.0.1., plays dss files perfectly
well. If you want it, I can email it to you, or you could see if they
have it on w w w .oldversion . com

The last version I have that seems to play .dss files is 4.15. You
can download it from w w w .vancedigital . com /downloads/Express Scribe 415.exe

Re: Express Scribe

ok, Julie... I'm a little confused here (actually, getting burnt out!!
LOL!) when you
said
<<For the money, I prefer w w w .dictrans . com WavPedal.>>

I went there...Wav Pedal...or software for a pedal? one of the
links...simply takes you to Express Scribe.
man, they are MASTERS at marketing, I'll tell you WHAT!! MOST sites that
offer "free software to play
back digital files" are actually Express Scribe...which would be FINE...if
they actually played the files!
Now we discover that yet another of the doctors he does uses DSS
files...gonna be a LOONGGG!! day.

AND!! I'll give a shout out to Rae here...I have used Smart Type for all
these lo many years...and I remember
HER years ago...."I'll give it up when they pry it from my dead, stiffened
hands." Are you still using it? I am...and NOW...we are having to buy yet
another copy. The old CD I have for the windows version no longer works. I
just wonder how many people still use it, or went elsewhere? I used it back
in DOS...like so many of you probably did...and still use the Windows.

Jody...wearing out here! and thanks!

I don't know where you went, but dictran . com (WavPedal . com ) only has
their product! If you pay for something, this is the program I like
best.

I know the CODEC is available for free, I just don't know where I
bookmarked it. You might run a Google search and if I find it first,
I'll post the link.

Re: Express Scribe

Jody,
Gear Player has a free five day trial...at least you can use it while
you are trying to figure out exactly what you want to do. That was my
plan and then I ended up buying it. At least it will take the pressure
off for five days.
