My Doctor Retired

My Doctor Retired

Hi, my physician retired, but he didn't notify me in the mail. Last
checkup was 2005, about 3 years ago. I thought AMA had a guideline or
requirement that says doctors should notify their active patients that
they are retired. Would I be considered an active patient and would
the doctor need to notify me in this case?

The AMA has no requirement or guidelines about this. If you haven't
been in to see your doctor for 3 years, they might not consider you to
be an "active" patient. All you can do now is contact them to see about
getting your records forwarded to a new practice. Failing that, you
will have to start fresh with a new doctor and work with them to get a
good history of your medical issues.

Re: My Doctor Retired

When I go to a new doctor, I take my own history with me. The doctors are
always very surprised to have such a comprehensive history and are
pleased--saves them time, and me as well. I do the same for my husband. My
hematologist wants to know how he can get all his patients to bring in their
histories.

I also think it is good advertising for my business as well as it is a
sample of my work.

No, it's not a good story. To make a long story short, she was the
victim of a stalker who was the husband of a worker at the practice.

Re: My Doctor Retired

Your doctor must legally provide you or your new doctor with your records.
If he doesn't, it is known as medical abandonment (will not see you, but has
not provided you with an alternative).
