Boosting volume through computer?

Does anyone have any tips on how/what to do to increase volume through
my speakers (headphones) when it is a doctor who speaks more softly?
Even with it up on speakers and through the software, sometimes it is
just not loud enough.

Thanks

Sometimes the issue is that there is more than one place to increase the
volume with software.

If the main volume control in Windows is not set high enough, it doesn't
matter how high you set the volume on your playback software.

First thing I would do is to check that the Windows volume is set high, then
play with your playback software until you get adequate volume. Be careful
that you don't hurt your ears by accidentally having it too high when you
test things with your headphones or speakers.

The main volume control in Windows can usually be accessed through an icon
on your taskbar, but it's not always present. If you don't have that icon,
you can access it through the "control panel."

Are your speakers amplified, meaning do they have their own power supply
that plugs into an AC outlet, or are they powered directly by the pc's
soundcard?

Not sure if you use ES but it has a "extra volume boost" option and you can
do that per file.

Thanks Ed and Jeannie. They are external speakers turned all the way up,
control panel volume control is all the way up, and ES is all the way up
as well.

Would there be external speakers that boost it louder do you think?
Fortunately not usually a problem for me, but it happens now and then.

The extra volume boost through ES didn't help any either?
File
Special audio processes
Extra volume boost

By "external" do you mean that they are external to the computer or that
they do indeed have a power cable that hooks up to a wall AC outlet,
powerstrip, etc.?

Ok.

I didn't mean to be pedantic, just had to clarify that.

If they're not really cheapo speakers, then another set of amplified
speakers probably isn't going to help much. If they are on the cheap and
small side, a better pair would probably help.

One more question, if you turn your current speakers up as loud as they can
go with one of the dictators that dictate at a normal volume, does the
volume get uncomfortably loud?

That's really the bottom line Rae, because if your current speakers achieve
loud sound levels when turned up with most of your files, getting new
speakers isn't going to help with the doc that whispers.
