OT- Animal lovers

OT- Animal lovers

I'm a frequent lurker and infrequent poster, but know there are a lot of
fellow animal lovers here and wanted to warn you about a product. My
wonderful 5-year-old German Shepard died Friday night from renal
failure. We think it was a chicken jerky treat we were feeding him. I
found out after the fact that these (and other similar treats) are on an
FDA site warning.

Here's the website:

http :// www .fda.gov/consumer/updates/jerky092807.html

The ones I gave him were Kingdom Pets brand from Costco and they are
made in China (believe me, I'm kicking myself for not reading that on
the package before). Wal-mart pulled a similar product off their
shelves for similar complaints.

We have been in touch with the FDA rep near us and they are taking it
very seriously. They have called us several times to get more
information, talked to our vet, and talked to Costco.

Just wanted to warn everyone since I was in the dark about this too.

Re: OT- Animal lovers

Deepest sympathy.

These are the only treats my 2 Salukis like and I have been feeding them for
a couple of years. The ones I buy are 100% chicken. I once bought another
brand that was only 97% chicken with some other ingredients, and I made sure
I did not get those again. My veterinarian had warned me about that brand
but said the 100% should be okay--they do come from China. The brand I use
is Beefeaters Chicken Filet 100% chicken. I would be interested to know if
that is the brand you were feeding. The site said nothing about brands. I
would be devastated if anything should happen to my dogs, as I am sure you
are.

Thanks for passing on the warning.

Re: OT- Animal lovers

The ones I bought were Kingdom Pets brand and they are also 100% chicken
breast fillet. I thought they would be really healthy too, but they are
from China. There are more websites about this (see below) that mention
more brand names, but the FDA is warning against all chicken jerky
products. I wouldn't give them anything from China, and I'm not feeding
the rest of my animals anything not made in the U.S. I just feel
horrible that I fed my dog a treat that turned out to be poison.

Re: OT- Animal lovers

I, too, have been trying to feed only US made dog food since the recall, but
even if they say made in this country, that does not mean some of the
ingredients may not be imported!

About the only other thing my fussy dogs like is cheese, and that's an
expensive snack. They like cheese crackers, but so do I! I don't need them
around. Thanks for the links.

How awful! I am thankful that my little shih tzu/maltese cross poochie
absolutely ADORES Wheat Thins, because they are cheap and very
low-calorie.

Thank you for the warning Laura.

I'm so sorry for your loss:(.

Re: OT- Animal lovers

Sorry to hear this - it's horrible this is still an issue. I'm thinking
I need to move from the dog biscuit dog treat route to what we get for
horses. LOL. DH gets stuff at local wholesale type scratch n dent store,
like boxes of Cheerios really cheap or marked down Xmas candy canes,
etc. Anything that says "horse" on it automatically escalates in price
to start. Dogs are good for most anything, including stuff like carrots
(some dogs at least)
