Obama's genealogy

Obama's genealogy

Until the subject came up of a person being a Muslim if his or her father
was a Muslim, I never gave Obama's genealogy any thought, and didn't realize
he was a junior. However, both Familysearch, com and Rootsweb, com have
information (albeit a bit scarce), and when I typed in "Barack
Obama"+genealogy, another search came up (about, com ) that was quite
fascinating.

"Barack Hussein OBAMA was born on 4 August 1961 at the Queen's Medical
Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein OBAMA, Sr. of Nyangoma-Kogelo,
Siaya District, Kenya, and Ann DUNHAM of Wichita, Kansas."

"When Barack Obama was two years old, his parents divorced and his father
moved to Connecticut to continue his education before returning to Kenya.

"When Obama was six, his mother married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian oil
manager. In 1967, when Soetoro's student visa was revoked because of
political unrest in Indonesia, Dunham and Barack, then in first grade,
accompanied him to Jakarta, Indonesia. Obama's half-sister, Maya Soetoro was
born after the family moved to Indonesia. Four years later she sent him back
to the United States to live with his maternal grandmother. "

" Barack Hussein OBAMA Sr. was born in 1936 in Nyangoma-Kogelo, Siaya
District, Kenya and died in a car crash in Nairobi, Kenya in 1982, leaving
three wives, six sons and a daughter. All but one of his children live in
Britain or the United States. One of the brothers died in 1984. He is buried
in the village of Nyangoma-Kogelo, Siaya District, Kenya."

Although this has nothing to do with his religon (a year in Catholic school
the rest in Muslim school), the information at about, com is interesting, at
least to me because I know so little about him.

Re: Obama's genealogy

Phyllis, I should point out most of this information has already been
disseminated by the national news stations over the past few months.
Some stations simply reported it to help intelligent voters, while
others liked to pick and chose parts that *might* influence those more
naive politically.

((Although this has nothing to do with his religon (a year in Catholic
school

Regarding the comment he attended a Muslim school, here's a link to
another site about that part of his education. This also was reported
on the national news.

I don't think the rest was in Muslim school. He attended a fairly
progressive, religion-tolerant school in Indonesia for 2 years as a young
child, if I'm not mistaken, before coming back to the United States.

There's a lot of BS propaganda out there about him. I can only imagine what
a heyday some of these folks would have had if Obama had ended up running
against Romney!

You might also check out his website for the bio they give there:
http :// www .barackobama,com /learn/meet_barack.php

It would at least give you a starting point for checking independent
sources. He's actually quite an interesting man. I also highly recommend
the books he's written. They're very interesting as well.

Re: Obama's genealogy

I did check out his web site, but I was looking at the information from a
genealogy perspective (which I've been almost addicted to for 20 years).
The about, com site seemed to have more information on his family without the
political bias. I like the family history of a person, not just the dates
and places of births and deaths. One of my ancestors came from a family who
seemed to have a corner on the market for deaths by consumption. He moved
to Hawaii to escape it, and died in his 20s anyway. I found it interesting
that Barack's father had three wives at his death, I guess because of the
events in Texas surrounding the children taken from the compound. I just
find genealogy fascinating.

Does it matter?

Re: Obama's genealogy

Only from a genealogical viewpoint. For some of us, family histories are
very interesting.

Re: Obama's genealogy

What was it they were saying earlier in the campaigns--that if you tracked
back far enough, Barack was related to Brad Pitt and Hillary to Angelina
Jolie? (Or maybe it was the other way around, I don't remember.)

I guess if you track back far enough, everyone is related to everyone:).

Re: Obama's genealogy

My BF and I went to hear Obama speak when he was here in Houston, and that's
one of the things he said himself. It was along the lines of, "When they
trace back your genealogy, you keep hoping you're going to end up being
related to somebody cool. Now, this is embarrassing!" <G>
