OT - Windows with touch screen

http :// apnews.myway,com /article/20080528/D90UL2MG0.html

Is this something of interest to any of you?

I am still on Windows XP since I found Vista to be way too slow in
accessing my various programs. Thank goodness I have two CD's of the
XP Home Edition system for any future laptops I might have to buy.

I don't see it as working for a standard desktop application, but I
can't imagine having what my dream PDA would currently be -- a Toshiba
U810 -- or one of those pen-tablet computers that people carry around to
collect data and then plug into a docking station without a touch screen.

Judity,

The reason there are many types of interface devices is there are many
different needs. For example, in harsh manufacturing environments,
touch screens are pretty much standard and have been for decades.

As far as your XP CDs go, one thing to keep in mind is that in the
future manufacturers will produce new laptops, etc. without XP device
drivers. This might mean that while XP will load on your new laptop,
certain things may not work.

As most of you know, I make my living designing and writing software
for Windows. However at home, I'm migrating to Ubuntu even though I get
most Microsoft software for free.

At the same time, I know that many of you are stuck with Windows
because that's the only OS supported by a lot of transcription hardware
and software.

Ubuntu? What is that, Bob? I've never even heard of it. The idea of
Linnux intriques me, but I'm not sure my DOS-based software would all
run on it.

Rae,

Unbuntu is a version of Linux. Your DOS-based software will only run on
DOS or Windows. However, there is a free product for Linux called
"Wine" that emulates Windows. There is a possibility that your DOS-
based software would run using Wine.

My son installed Ubuntu on my computer and I love it. My needs aren't as
varied as they were before I retired, but it does everything I want it to
do, does it well, and does many things I haven't even tried yet.

Phyllis,

What do you use to read this newsgroup on Ubuntu? I've got PAN loaded
on Ubuntu, but there are a few things about it that frustrate me.

Unless those two CD's are new and have never been installed on another pc,
you aren't going to be able to use them.

Ed,

It depends upon whether they are retail versions or vendor-specific
ones. If they are retail, she can call Microsoft and tell them she has
replaced the machine that was originally running that copy of XP Home
and they will allow the new machine to authenticate.

Fortunately, in the corporate world, I don't have to worry about that
garbage. However, in the real world, that's a real issue for friends
and family. It's one of the reasons I'm migrating to Ubuntu. For people
like Phyllis, who don't need Windows-only software, Ubuntu can be a
great alternative.

Thanks for the info Bob.

I do have an OEM XP disk around here somewhere, but as you mention, support
for new drivers is shifting more and more to Vista, so I'm not expecting it
to be of much use in the future.

In any case, I still think XP continues to be the current better choice for
MT because of software support for older programs, but for everything else I
do, I prefer Vista. Terri and I both have laptops with Vista and they have
been incredibly stable and dependable.
