It also creates small amounts of alcohol when it breaks down in the
digestion process, which causes problems for some alcoholics.

These days, in order not to get railed upon by people who don't want
their "Nutrasweet is totally safe" boat rocked and who want to shoot
messengers rather than hear things they don't want to hear, I just tell
people that I have an allergic reaction to it. But every time I hear a
younger person talking about unexplained memory loss, I *always* ask if
they are using Nutrasweet in any form. If they are, I suggest they stop
it and see if their memory improves like mine did, and placebo effect or
not, at least a half-dozen people I know of have had their memory
problems improve when they stop taking in Nutrasweet.

Re: OT - Just what people need!

Samantha, I don't doubt you have an allergy to NutraSweet. Food allergies
are more prevalent than most people realize. However, I do have a food
allergy to sugar, which many people consider a "natural" product, though how
they do puzzles me. I personally get no adverse reaction to NutraSweet, but
I get a bad reaction to sugar, which I avoided for years because it gave me
diarrhea and stomach upset. NutraSweet does not appear to affect me.
People should be cautious about any processed food but it upsets many of us
(yes, I turned out to be diabetic)to have those who try to get a food that
has been a "godsend" to some of us, off the market or banned. Warnings are
fine, and I listen to them, but the argument against NutraSweet has gone far
beyond that at times.

Re: OT - Just what people need!

My MIL is also allergic to sugar. She gets a raspy cough when she eats it.
Her doctors think she's crazy and give her that "quack" look whenever she
says she's allergic to sugar. Some have even laughed at her. But it's true.
She had this cough for years and no doctor could diagnose it, but when she
doesn't eat sugar she has no cough.

My sister gets that from cilantro. I do react to cilantro as well -- it
tastes like crap to me (big grin). But seriously, my throat gets tight when
I have something with it in it. I'm ticked they have started adding it to
Mexican dishes around here when they didn't before.

Re: OT - Just what people need!

There are very few food items I don't like. <sigh> But cilantro I can't
stand. If cilantro is an ingredient, I won't eat it. If they can not add it,
I ask them to not add it. Some things it's cooked in, and then I just can't
order that thing. It literally gags me.

Re: OT - Just what people need!

Your mother's doctor is a little behind the times. My doctor calls it sugar
intolerance and says it is not uncommon. It often is a precursor to
diabetes. (Not the cause, but often should be considered a warning sign.)
If sugar were a new product it probably could not get approved! But the
sugar lobby takes care of that. There are claims that sugar is involved
with hypertension and heart disease. I don't believe in banning it, but I
think there should be more information out there.

People need to be aware of what they eat and how it affects them, and if
something causes a reaction, then eliminate it from your diet, but don't say
everyone else must eliminate it. Peanut butter, a perfectly natural product
(at least the kind I buy) that millions of kids grow up on, is a deadly
allergen to some people, but a really good food to others.

I believe people should have a choice, but it should be an "informed"
choice, as how else can you make an intelligent decision.

I don't have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is those
unprintable adjectives who insist that people who say they have a
reaction to Nutrasweet are liars or hypochondriacs, that it causes no
reactions whatsoever.

I betcha there's NOTHING out there that doesn't cause adverse reactions in
some people. I have no idea why people would act like you guys were nuts
for reporting problems with either Nutrasweet or sugar!

sometimes.

Boy, no kidding Samantha! They actually think you make it up. DH gives me
crap about rosemary. I cannot tolerate it. It makes me ill and my mouth and
lips swell when I eat it. He tells me it is all in "my head" and that I am
not allergic to any of those things (cilantro, garlic, rosemary). Yet he
can't eat peppers (green or red or any of those but that is legit).

Arsenic is natural but I don't eat that either, so when they tell you that
use that argument with them. I get that when I tell folks my mother almost
died from garlic allergy. I have problems with garlic as well, not like her.
I just get stomach upset and sometimes diarrhea. One time I had a lot and I
did get red lips and slightly swollen tongue, so I need to start watching
it. Try to eat out with that problem! :) Seriously people can be allergic to
"natural" things. That is such an uneducated statement for someone to make.
Natures lovely flowers kill me! I love lilacs but cannot be near them. I
detest Easter lilies they nearly put me in a coma.

Barb,

Does Splenda affect you? I much prefer that to NutraSweet. No
aftertaste that I can detect, and I haven't heard any real evidence of
problems with it.

So far I am okay with Splenda, but I hear that it can make blood sugar
spike in diabetics, so I am careful not to overdo because diabetes and
other endocrine disorders run in my family.

Re: OT - Just what people need!

Incidentally, Samantha, Splenda does not spike my sugar, although I have
also heard from other diabetics they have had a problem with it, and others
say no. I bake my own bran muffins for breakfast, Splenda, high fiber,
banana and nuts in them (and bananas are high in sugar), and An hour later
my blood sugar is fine. But, about the only time I use any sugar substitute
is for breakfast--in my coffee, and what is in the bran muffin. The rest of
the day I just watch the carbs. Once or twice a week I may have a diet
gingerale which is NutraSweet, but I really drink water as my beverage most
of the time and in cold spells herbal tea. I have always been a milk
drinker, but too many carbs, too many calories. I do take calcium. Of
course I've been dieting to lose weight for more than 2 years--slow going,
but I have lost nearly 50 pounds--20 more to go. My diabetes is type 2 and
I have kept it under control with low-carb dieting and weight loss. In fact
my A1C comes back nondiabetic now for over a year.
