I can also cast a vote for GearPlayer, have been using it happily for
dss files with no problems.

Apparently the free five day trial only allows you to use a mouse to start
and stop dictation. You have to purchase the licensed version to get foot
pedal control.

No, Ed. I used the free five day trial with the wave pedal I had used
with Express Scribe. I didn't purchase a pedal from Transcription Gear
when I did buy the program. I used the free five day trial as soon as I
downloaded it and transcribed as I normally did with Express Scribe.

You are correct, the five day demo has full functionality.

I'm downloading it out of curiosity.

Ed,
I'm curious to know what you think about it after using it for a few

Used Gear Player for a couple of files today.

One of my favorite Express Scribe features is that you can set up the main
part of the foot pedal to rewind by tapping it several times. In essence, I
never have to shift my foot off of the center of the pedal and that saves me
a ton of time and energy.

I don't see an option on Gear Player for setting the foot pedal up this way.
Is there one?

If not, it's a deal breaker for me, no matter how much I like the rest of
the program.

Re: Express Scribe

Ed,
All the years I have used Express Scribe I never even knew you could do
that with the foot pedal. I don't know if it's possible with
Transcription Gear. I'll ask them since I bought the program they'll
reply fairly quickly. It would be a nice option to have.

I started out with ST/DOS and begrudgingly moved to ST/WIN when
they FINALLY got it released. Only this past February did I
realize that ST/WIN was going to require an upgrade to Vista. I
haven't moved to Vista yet, but if it takes them half as long as
it did to make an upgrade to work with Vista as it did to make an
upgrade for Windows, I decided I wasn't going to be willing to go
through that again. As I recall, it took months and months, even
though we kept hearing the upgrade would be released "any day
now." With that memory still all too fresh in my mind, I moved
to Instant Text the first of February. Granted, I'm still
getting used to it, but I'm glad I made the move.

Have you tried making sure that DSS files are "checked" in the ES
settings?
Settings
Files
Check "dss" - that might just use it to automatically open then using ES,
though.

Did some looking and here's what NCH says:
File Formats Technical Support
Solutions to Common Problems
Wav files do not load properly
Wma files do not load properly
DCT files do not load properly
iTunes/aac/m4p files do not load properly
DSS files do not load properly
Real Audio files (ra or ram) do not load properly
Vox files do not load properly
Vox or raw files sound too fast or too slow
Sony msv or dvf files do not load properly
OMA / OMG / ATP files do not load properly / Only the first 1.01 minutes
of my OMA / OMG / ATP file gets converted
MIDI files do not load properly
CDA files / Audio CD files do not load properly
ASF / ASX files do not load properly
MP2 files do not load properly
MP3 files do not load properly
I have a file of a format not covered by any of the previous questions -
this format does not load properly in your software
None of the above apply...

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------

P. Wav files do not load properly

If you are unable to load a .wav file you might need to install the
correct ACM codec. The ACM codecs are installed with Windows, but not all
codecs are installed on all computers.

Try opening the file with Windows Media Player - sometimes Microsoft
installs codecs 'on-demand', which means that they download when Media
Player wants them.

If the wav file is a ATRAC recording you might need to install the Sony
plugin. Download the ATRAC3 drivers.

See The ACM Codecs Page for more information.

P. Wma files do not load properly

Try opening the file with Windows Media Player - sometimes Microsoft
installs codecs 'on-demand', which means that they download when Media
Player wants them.

Also, please check that you have the latest DirectX installed. Go to
www .windowsupdate, com , select the "Custom Install" option, and see if
"DirectX" is listed in the software list. Download and install it.

If the files still won't work, then they are probably copy-protected by
Digital Rights Management (DRM). You can check for DRM protection by
loading the file into Windows Media Player and then looking under the
license tab in the file's Properties; when the content is protected there
will be a message to this effect.

P. DCT files do not load properly

The person who is sending or creating the dct file has probably selected
a codec you don't have installed on the machine.

The easiest option is to ask the person sending the files to use a more
common codec (we recommend GSM6.10).

Otherwise the easiest way to auto-install a codec is to open a wav file
encoded with the same format with Windows Media Player. Click here.
Download the relevant wav sample and open it with Windows Media Player.

P. iTunes/aac/m4p files do not load properly

Our software does not support M4P format files. The .m4p extension is AAC
purchased from Apple's Music Store (iTune) and is protected by a Digital
Rights Management scheme.

P. DSS files do not load properly

DSS is a proprietary format, not an open standard, and unfortunately some
of the newer recorders don't implement DSS in a way that is compatible
with our software. The only work-around that we can suggest is to make
sure that the person sending you the files is using SP mode on the
recorder.

If the recorder supports other open formats (like mp3) it is always
better to use them.

If your program crashes when you attempt to load or convert a dss file it
is possible that the file is corrupt. Ask the user to redock and resend
the file to you.

If you get a strange endless repeating of the file, or a truncation, and
you first installed prior to 6 January 2005, please install the more
recent dss32.exe from www .nch,com .au/components.

Here's a sony plug-in page I found on the NCH website:
http :// www .nch,com .au/scribe/sony.html

Yes, Gear player plays DSS that's what I use and I love it. It is, however,
not free but it is a lot better than Express Scribe in my opinion. My subs
that helped on a job could not hear dictation that was clear as a bell on
gear player.

ES allows you to selectively filter high and low audio frequencies, which is
another feature I haven't seen on the other playback programs I've used.

If you don't apply any filtering at all, ES will not sound very good because
it gives you the full audio spectrum, including high frequency hiss and low
frequency rumble.

I wasn't happy with the audio on ES until I made some adjustments using the
frequency filters. My male dictator and female dictators required different
amounts of high versus low filtering.
