OT - Gas prices

Re: OT - Gas prices

Apparently considerably on the large bags (which I never buy). Something
like formerly $10 now as high as $30 (sounds like perhaps a manufactured
fear to race money)?

To race money? I need a nap -- to raise that should be. Yikes talk about
proof reading skills -- but then I never do proof these notes.

Re: OT - Gas prices

If you stock up on things like rice, flour, etc.down here in our climate you
only wind up with bugs in them and have to throw them out anyway. I keep my
flour in the freezer and buy rice (which is not on a low-carb diet) in
smaller quantities. Pasta gets bugs. I have opened sealed packages and
found bugs in them. But....We do have a garden and we make good use of it.
May turn vegetarian unwillingly! During WWII we had chickens, and I swore I
would never own another one, but..... We also used to raise our own beef
and pork when we lived in NJ, but for just 2 of us that is not practical.

It's like that around here too. Rice, pasta, etc. goes into tupperware
type containers or stays in the fridge

We bought some kind of snack mix at Sam's Club that came in nice tall,
cylindrical containers with screw tops; great for storing spaghetti and
other pasta!

Re: OT - Gas prices

Well, I was just out and gas was $3.72 - $3.67 range.

No rationing of rice here yet. My friend in Alabama doesn't like it so she
will send me her share. :) They say it's because we are wasting corn on
that useless ethanol (more energy and toxins to produce so stupid but
typical). Apparently grain shortage as well. Apparently Sam's club was
limiting rice purchases back east to four bags (our Korean restaurant owners
who shop Costco would go ape-shit out here).

Re: OT - Gas prices

The corner gas stations are all at $3.77 or $3.79. For some strange
reason the Chevron station will really jack up the price every time,
like 10¢ a gallon more than the others, then bring it down to where the
others are over the next few days. Out by my girls' school the lowest
I've seen at a non-Arco station was $3.83 at a Valero.

How much of that Brazilian price is taxes? In Europe they've always
paid much more than us, but a large part is in taxes.

Kim, my sister didn't tell me that. Her youngest son and his family
live in West Africa, while her oldest daughter and family are now
serving in Italy. I wonder what they have to pay for gas in those
places.

Re: OT - Gas prices

I have a question. We buy our gas at BJs and it is usually anywhere from 2
to 3 cents, occasionally as much as 5 cents cheaper than on the street.

But, we have a Pontiac Vibe that is rated at 36 highway. On longer trips we
had been getting about 34 to 36 mpg, but lately we have only been getting
about 27 to 28 mpg. All the things they recommend from tire pressure to no
extra weight, etc. we have done--still no better than 27 to 28 on longer
trips. Yesterday when we filled up there was a big sign on the pumps
saying up to 10% of the gas could be ethanol! My husband says ethanol will
not give you as good gas mileage as regular gas, and suddenly we are aware
why our mpg have dropped.

So, are we really saving on the gas by adding ethanol? And it is most
certainly one of the reasons for food prices increasing, not to mention
increased transportation for the food! Does anyone know then if the ethanol
is really reducing oil use? Or, as the saying goes, are we just cutting off
our nose to spite our face?

Re: OT - Gas prices

Barbara,

Your husband is correct about ethanol. One unit of Ethanol doesn't
contain as much energy as one unit of gasoline, so you don't as good
gas mileage. Also, I believe that ethanol is corrosive to standard fuel
systems, so you probably should avoid it.

BTW, Unleaded regular $3.359, Premium $3.559 at Costco last night.

Re: OT - Gas prices

Bob, I'm not sure about ethanol being corrosive to standard fuel
systems. Out here in CA we're required to add an "oxygenating agent" to
our gas formulation for the summer months, and that agent now is
ethanol. All vehicles use this gas, and I have yet to have any car of
mine have problems with the fuel system other than the usual wear and
tear. I have noted the 10% decrease in gas mileage when we switch to
the summer formulation; my Civic gets 30 to 33 mpg in the winter months,
27 to 30 in summer.

Re: OT - Gas prices

That's interesting that your mileage drops in the summer. My daughter has a
Prius in NJ. In the summer she was getting 50 mpg, winter same route every
day to work, and mileage dropped to low 30s!

My husband says the newer cars are supposed to be able to use the ethanol
spiked gas and that it has probably been in there since our mileage started
to drop which was 3 or 4 months ago. Just they didn't put up the sign until
this week. Don't know whether they are bragging or whether it's meant as a
warning. So, again, are we really saving oil?

Re: OT - Gas prices

Putting an ethanol-enhanced gas in our Jeep before a vacation stranded us
somewhere in No. Cal. years ago. It was breaking "stuff" off the gas line
and clogging up our filter. It was a nightmare.

could it be that you are using AC in the summer months? I always get worse
gas mileage when using the AC
