Ann Curry was on MSNBC tonight, and she just happened to share the
important life lesson taught to her from her family (her mother was a
victim of bombing in Japan I think it was) - Don't quote me here, just
typing to get the sort-of point across, but apparently they taught her
that she is not a victim and she should imagine hearing just how all
of her ancestors are cheering her on and how proud they are because
she had the chance to benefit exactly the way her ancestors imagined
when they fought for it in all of their suffering, slavery, battles,
etc.

I didn't see the interview but what she is saying is exactly what some of
the black leaders here are trying to get across. Don't make yourself
victim and use that as an excuse - make your ancestors proud by showing
them they didn't fight in vain.

Jeannie, it's been a long time since my friend told me this story, so I
honestly do not remember what, if any, tickets he got. May have just
been warning, if anything, and if it was anything it was something
minor, speeding or maybe some inspection-related issue. My friend is a
very matter-of-fact person and I don't believe she was exagerating by
any means. I know I've certainly never been stopped unless there was a
reason, and certainly not multiple times. I don't always keep it at the
speed limit, and I still have rarely been pulled over - but I'm a white
woman.
Of course, here it may be more apparent when they are doing this
because there are still very few non-white people in this state compared
to many other states.
My son-in-law is black (African). Of course, they live in DC area so
there are people of all races. My DD was telling me about some people
using the "N" word and that it really didn't seem to bother my SIL very
much. I asked her if she thought he really had any grasp on how deep
this issue is for some people as far as being bigots and racists. She
said she didn't think he did.

just curious as to what they cited him with. I'm a white woman with a lead

everybody back in the pool!" Speaking of pool, the small Southern
Illinois town that my husband grew up in refused to build a new swimming
pool simply because they didn't want to let the black residents swim in
it. This is something that happened in the last 10 years, so don't tell
me racism is dead.
