The things that make Gisele laugh reveal a great deal about her. She

I remember when I a kid, heading over the hill to see my black friends
who lived in the middle of a field. the white kids could see me heading
over there, and they used to yell "nigger lover!" after me. these are
the same people who are now telling black people to "get over it."
Moral high ground? You betcha!

Nope, those people are still yelling "nigger lover" in an older and weaker
voice.

There are prominent blacks saying "get over it." It's just that you find
that difficult because it doesn't fit your stereotype.

Wow -it's nice that you were able to keep up with people many years later
to know what they are speaking out against now. Have you really heard them
telling blacks to "get over it?"

Do you really believe you are the only person on this board who had (or
still has) black friends. It isn't a moral high ground you are standing
upon, it is your holier-than-thou attitude combined with a "poor little
victims" mentality.

Frankly, I think your attitude is more insulting to black folks than someone
telling them to give up their anger and live a good life.

So anyone who points out inequities that still exist to this day is
contributing to a charge of "victimhood." Reminds me of a book I read a
while back about Nazi Germany, where every time the Jews were purged or
attacked or had laws put into place against them, the Nazi's said it was
the Jews themselves who had brought this treatment upon them. Many
white people still don't want to admit what has happened in this
country. Take a look online and find out what percentage of people in
our prisons our black. There are so many of them, you'd think we had to
bring them in from another country to have so many incarcerated. Kind
of hard for those guys to live a good life.

I guess that makes me priviledged then, because my single mother of 3
raised us for a few years in a section of town referred to as shack
town where I got to see the biggest damned rat on our front porch you
ever did see (or at least it looked like the size of a cat to me at
the age of around 5). We also lived in Detroit where some very scary
things happened, such as the white neighbor who stripped his
girlfriend and baby down and wrapped a coat hanger around her neck
with the other end of it attached to the trigger of a shotgun and
stood them on the balcony as some sort of SWAT team surrounded our
place for our safety. I can still remember her coming over and me
talking to her in awe and even asking to get a better look at the
wires holding her jaws together. We also got to huddle in a corner
waiting for police while waiting for the shadow outside the door that
we could see under the door to leave. I also got all of the money
snatched out of my purse at a Detroit bus station by a black man. Two
old ladies asked me if I was okay. My sister was raped in her first
rented house in around 1993 - suspected white person, but nobody knows
for sure because she was blindfolded and they have never caught the
man. I also got to witness my mother waiting in line for food stamps
with us being approached by black, white and Hispanic men asking her
if she would rather be a prostitute and make some real good money. She
never went back and gave up public assistance after that and made her
way working under the table where she could to support us. I had young
black kids think it was funny to call our dog across a very busy
street, only to watch her get run over, suffer, crying, and die, just
because. Maybe they felt badly after, but I don't know. I got to sit
on the couch and stare at her out the window waiting for pickup with
her legs sticking out of a flattened Pepsi box in an attempt to
conceal her from us. I had a Hispanic woman who spoke no English
attempt to cut off a wart on my hand with a pair of scissors. I'm
still smart enough to realize there are idiots in every race, but
maybe someONE who doesn't find THEMSELVES worthy just can't. Placing
blame is better than admitting something like that.

And if you grew up hearing stories of your own ancestors, not that very
long ago, being brought to this country in those circumstances, you
don't think that would have any effect on you?

I'm reading a book right now about the Freedom Riders who risked jail,
beatings and worse so that black people could ride buses in this country
from one state to another. This happened in my lifetime, that blacks
had sit in the back of the bus or get off the bus entirely if a white
person wanted that seat. There are people who are still alive today who
were maimed during those freedom rides.

I just thought of something funny - you know funny things children
say....Anyway, you HAVE to remember that he had no idea what the
implications of what he was saying really were, but the sheer thinking
behind it was what was funny....(nobody had said anything about black
either)....We took our kids to Greenfield Village quite a few years
back. Jake was prolly about 5 I'd say. They have actual slave quarters
there with a lot of history, straw beds, dirt floors, etc. Anyway, I
can't remember what brought it on, but he asked what a slave was. It
didn't occur to me he wouldn't know they were mainly black people
because of the pictures throughout the village. I explained to him in
terms I thought he could understand. leaving out any mention of
brutality because I didn't he was ready for that sort of history
lesson at 5.... that many years ago people owned other humans and they
had to do their 'dirty work/chores," as in taking care of everything
from the very difficult yard work, the garbage, cleaning the owner's
whole house, the kids toys, etc. and out of nowhere he interrupted,
riding on his father's shoulders, and said "Hmmm. I gotta get me one
of those." Actually I'm remembering Claire being in the stroller, so
he might have been around 4'ish. lol.

LMAO. That leads me to another funny conversation we had when he was
around 3-4 -- he used to stare at this curly-haired blonde girl in a
magazine - just stare at it. I asked him why he liked her so much and
he informed me that when he grows up he is going to marry his sister
and THAT was going to be his girlfriend. Just as I explained to him
that it is wrong to "own" other people in the other conversation, I
explained to him that once married it is against the law to have a
girlfriend. lol.
