Yep, it's the ol' "My temp crown fell off, what do I do?" question again

Yep, it's the ol' "My temp crown fell off, what do I do?" question again

Upper right 1st molar... RCT was done about 2 months ago, temp crown
fitted about a month ago, permanent crown scheduled for one week from
now. But the temp crown fell off today. I'm going to TRY to get my
appointment moved up to tomorrow. But in the meantime, what should I
do? I have Googled this extensively and there doesn't seem to be a
clear consensus about whether or not a patient should attempt to
reseat his crown until he can get treatment. I was going to try to
stick it on with Vaseline (as suggested by many) but it's not apparent
to me which way the crown should go on. I don't want to put it on the
wrong way and cause cuts in my gum, damage to the tooth--or worse,
have the crown come off again and wind up in my belly or G-d knows
where.

I don't know if it'll help to answer the question, but I've asked my
long-suffering lady friend to take a couple of pictures of the tooth
in question.

(Yuck! I didn't realize my teeth looked that bad).

Thanks in advance for your advice.

You can use cream denture adhesive to hold the temporary crown
in place until you get it put back on at the dental office.

Your new crown is probably not back from the lab, so they will
just replace the temp.

Not a big deal, but you don't want to run around without the temp
for a week either.

Understood, but I'm not really sure which way the crown goes on, the
way they match up is not obvious. And It's kind of awkward to try to
position it on the tooth to check the fit while pulling my cheek out
of the way.

What's the danger from going without the crown for several days to a
week: damage to the tooth from chewing, grinding or whatever?
Infection? Both? There's no guarantee that I'll even be able to get an
appointment tomorrow.

Most of the time there is no problem. The teeth can drift when not in
biting contact, but the chances of significant drift in one week is
pretty slim. The tooth has had root canal, so obviously there's no
problem with sensitivity.
Worth a call in case your dentist is concerned, but it's probably OK.
The tooth looks fine, btw.

Do the dentists on board think he should not eat solid food and just stick
to liquids (with a straw or not). Wouldn't that be safer or is just a
person not educated in dentistry's opinion? Or is best I not express an
opinion at all.

No reason to be that restrictive. I don't want dental treatment
to interfere with normal life any more than necessary. I tell
patients to be a little careful with the temporized tooth, and
if the temp comes off, drop by and we will recement it. If they
are away from home, don't panic, use denture adhesive if possible,
watch the cold stuff if the tooth hasn't had a root canal, and
get one back on if it's going to be more than a day or two.

The best thing to do is take out the old cement with a q tip.
clean off the tooth with tissue. Try fitting it on, usually only
goes on one way... don't force it. then use toothpaste as a
temp cement (don't use vaseline) until your visit.

If you can't wait, go visit the dds and get it recemented.

Don't leave it out, it'll make the permanent crown not fit
or your cementation visit longer.

Re: Yep, it's the ol' "My temp crown fell off, what do I do?" question again

Thanks for the replies, everybody. I'm pleased to report that
everything worked out.

I called the dental office first thing in the morning. It turned out
that my permanent crown had come in already and they were able to fit
me in early the same afternoon. I was in and out in 30 minutes... and
since I had taken the whole afternoon off, I went bowling :)
