A root canal no longer needed?

Tooth #6, big cavity, been filled before. The huge filling came out. Was
starting to be a tooth ache.

Dentist looked at the Xray, and says that the pulp is involved. Abscess, and
spreading.

A couple days amoxicillin took away the pain. Is it still a good idea to
have the thousand dollar root canal treatment, before getting a crown?

Absolute necessity (if your post is accurate).
