Do I need this prescription for reading?
Do I need this prescription for reading?
I have a new prescription with an increase in only one eye. The glasses I now
wear are (L) -2.25 and (R) -2.75 -025 x 145. My previous prescription was
just -2.25 in both eyes. I've never worn glasses for reading but in the week
or so since I've had these new glasses (and not worn them for long periods of
reading or at the PC) I've found that the eye with the stronger prescription
feels quite strained. At the PC I probably sit closer than is usual to
compensate but the strain is still quite noticeable. I always thought
nearsighted people didn't need to wear glasses for reading so is my
experience usual?

Did the OD you go to recommend that you wear your
-2.25 glasses for all reading?

Are you getting older? My glasses are -2.5 in both eyes. I can read
fine without glasses. I used to be able to use the PC also. As I
aged my depth of focus decreased so the monitor which is further away
than a book is out of focus. Maybe it is time to look at getting
computer glasses.

Are you getting older? My glasses are -2.5 in both eyes. I can read
fine without glasses. I used to be able to use the PC also. As I

the stronger prescription in the right eye might help for distance
vision but might also be causing added strain for closer vision, try
sitting further from the screen, not closer (if wearing the glasses).

the stronger prescription in the right eye might help for distance
vision but might also be causing added strain for closer vision, try
sitting further from the screen, not closer (if wearing the glasses).

There's no reason you should "have to" wear the glasses for reading.

Thanks for the replies. I can see well with my glasses. It's just that
without them, particularly at the PC, the right (worst) eye feels very
strained. I'm wearing them as I type this and can see the monitor just fine
to around 14" but if I take them off I'd get eye ache within 10-20 minutes.
