Pathogens Require Iron

Crusade for iron: iron uptake in unicellular eukaryotes and its
significance for virulence.
Sutak R, Lesuisse E, Tachezy J, Richardson DR

Trends Microbiol 2008 May 7.

The effective acquisition of iron is a pre-requisite for survival of
all organisms, especially parasites that have a high iron requirement.
In mammals, iron homeostasis is meticulously regulated; extracellular
free iron is essentially unavailable and host iron availability has a
crucial role in the host-pathogen relationship. Therefore, pathogens
use specialized and effective mechanisms to acquire iron. In this
review, we summarize the iron-uptake systems in eukaryotic unicellular
organisms with particular focus on the pathogenic species: Candida
albicans, Tritrichomonas foetus, Trypanosoma brucei and Leishmania
spp. We describe the diversity of their iron-uptake mechanisms and
highlight the importance of the process for virulence.

OK, Tom. Straight question. No rants, no dots.

The article says "In mammals, iron homeostasis is meticulously regulated".
in countless posts you've said that it isn't. Would you like to revise your
views on iron absorbtion and excretion in view of this article?

Is this the relevant part to your pointing out the fact iron is
required by all organisms?

THAT is why the body produces iron binding substances to remove the
iron away from the pathogen disallowing the pathogen from getting its'
food / iron.

Iron is required by all / everything .. it is the very basis of
life .. WHEN .. **regulated** / kept in check / no random rusting.

That is why they kill people with Aids when they give them iron .. it
feeds the pathogen.

Effect of lactoferrin on enteric pathogens. [JOURNAL ARTICLE]
Biochimie 2008 Apr 18.
Much has been learned in recent years about the mechanisms by which
breastfeeding improves child health and survival. However, there has
been little progress in using these insights to improve pediatric
care. Factors that are important for protecting the breast fed infant
might be expected to decrease the adverse effects of weaning on
diarrhea, growth, and development. Lactoferrin, an iron-binding
protein with multiple physiological functions (anti-microbial, anti-
inflammatory, and immunomodulatory), is one of the most important
proteins present in mammalian milk. Protection against
gastroenteritis
is the most likely biologically relevant activity of lactoferrin.
Multiple in vitro and animal studies have shown a protective effect
of
lactoferrin on infections with enteric microorganisms, including
rotavirus, Giardia, Shigella, Salmonella and the diarrheagenic
Escherichia coli. Lactoferrin has two major effects on enteric
pathogens: it inhibits growth and it impairs function of surface
expressed virulence factors thereby decreasing their ability to
adhere
or to invade mammalian cells. Thus, lactoferrin may protect infants
from gastrointestinal infection by preventing the attachment by
enteropathogens in the gut. Recently several clinical trials in
children have started to address this issue. Whether lactoferrin can
prevent a significant portion of diarrheal disease remains to be
determined.
